At the time between the Western and Eastern Zhou Dynasties, there appeared a special political situation. If lasted for as long as 17 years (from 774B.C to 760B.C,ic. between the 8~?year of King-You of Zhou and the tune when King-Xie was killed). This is believed as an important phenomenon in Chinese history as well as a key social problem in Thou Dynasties. The poet of the 揝hi ~XiaoYa 昛hengYue?described that 搕he grand Thou kingdom was ruined by a beauty? Besides this, however, there were also two other reasons that caused the fall of the Dynasty: struggle for the throne; the attack of the allied forces of three kingdoms. Under such circumstances, the poets at that period of time wrote a number of poems on the topic of 搕he thought and the elegy for the all of the western Zhou Dynasty? Among all of which, ~~JieNanShanu (written by Jia-Fu, the Da-Fu of Zhou, the title of senior official of that time). 揃an? 揝haoMin?and 揨hanYang~ (written by Fan Bo also was a Da-Fu of Thou); 換ingYing? 揃inZhichuYan?and 揧i?written by Wei-Wu-Gong) are regarded as the typical representative works of this period. Jia-Fu, Jia-Bo, or Jia-Bo-Fu, (here refers to the same person as ditto), the author of the 揓ieNanShan? was a son of a veteran and prominent family in Yi-Jiu Kingdom. He served as the assistant Premier for both King-You and King-Ping. After the death of the King-You at Mount-Li, he served King-Tian afterwards. In 揓ieNanShan? the author describes the portents of the Kingdom抯 collapse, expressing his gloomy grief By writing this piece of poem, (which should be done in the first year of King-Ping 771 B.C). He intended to find out the origin of the misfortune of King-You and point out a better way to carry out for King-Ping. 揨hanYang? 揃an? 揝haoMin?were all created by the same person, Fan BO, who was of the influential officials in Zhou Dynasty, held the high post during the time of King-Ping and King-You. In his poem 揨han Yang? (which means 憀ook at with reverence?or 憄ay respects to?, Fan-Bc revealed his sadness and grief in expecting the fail of the country. He satirized such deeds as King-You doted on his favorite imperial concubine II i~] 揂~E)f-i?~i4~抝4tFJ~t~it ABSTRACT named Bao-Si, and could make a distinction between enemy and friend. As a result, the kingdom抯 collapse was unavoidable. The latter ones 揃an?and 揝haoMin?also reflected the social reality of the time, but it was different from that of in 揨han Yang? Judging by the author抯 living experiences and contents of the poem, we can deduce that 揨hanYang?appeared in the very first year of the reign of King-Ping (770 B.C) while 揃an?and 揝haoMin?should be written between the. time of the 9th and 1 1~ year of the reign of King-Ping in Zhou Dynasty (773B.C-- 771B.C). Wei-Wu-Gong was a chief officer of Justice under King-Ping of Zhou and turned out many volumes of poetry, but his major works were written all in the first decade of the reign of King-Ping. 換ingYing?which means the fly was made in about 771B.C), in which he satirized King-You of Zhou on his relegating and slaughtering his capable and loyal officials on the grounds of his accepting those evil officials?slanders. In the poem, the author did not only describe all kinds of omens and signs to indicate that the country was dying, but also show his loyalty axkd sincerity to Yi-Jiu, King-Tian of...
