This thesis, while taking into consideration of the development ofChinese traditional operas, is intended to make a close study of Fujian'straditional operas in the new period from the perspective of creation,concentrating on the function of the subjectivity of dramatists on themes andforms. The thesis suggests that the dramatists who are concerned aboutsociety and human existence from an aesthetic view, set their creation ofhistorical operas in "combination of history with art" and thus representhistorical spirit as well as the spirit of the age and reveals human life and itsrelations with history and reality. Based on this argument, the thesisexemplifies the literariness, reflexivity, philosophical merits and artisticforms in Fujian's traditional operas.The thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter one traces the study ofoperas by both Chinese and foreign scholars such as Zhang Geng, whodeveloped a theory of opera by examining the creative practices, and thenmade my argument on the characteristics of Fujian's traditional operas andtheir related authors. Chapter two explores the aesthetic tendency of Fujian'sdramatists in their particular approaches towards themes and artistic formsand try to find out the fOrmation of images and the way in which the innerfeelings and lived experiences are expressed. And in doing this, it will revealthe artistic values of Fujian's traditional operas. Chapter three deals with thestyles of Fujian's traditional operas and their respective authors, dwelling onhow they construct individual characters and what achievements they havemade in the new period. Chapter four analyzes the reasons why Fujian'straditional operas have their own outstanding characteristics, which arerelated to cultural environment, intellectual background, and social conditions.It points out in conclusion their virtues and problems.
