The invention of movies is one of the greatest mircles iii modern history of arts. The movie, as the most influential art in this century, has always been quick to respond to both the era and every respect of a society. As an extremely complicated phenomenon of social culture, the movie reflects the information of the era and society in a more concentrated fashion ,conveying the transmutation of the cultural psychology of a nation, the change of concepts and social consciousness of the era. And in the meantime, the movie itself is also greatly affected by the cultural tradition of a nation, driving forward and developing continuously in the course of inheritence, transcendence, reference and creation; cherishing and developing in a greater extent the excel lent cultural and aesthetic traditions of the nation in the comparison of different nations; and experiencing further the rapid changes from ideological content to the expression of forms in the background of m ulticulturalism. From the very beginning, the most principal function of the movie is to record梬hether it is to record a play rehearsed or an everyday occurrence; and the main function of the documentary is to aecord抰he latter. The documentary shows its particular value by recording what has happened in the past that can never occurred again. It is just like a kaleidoscope of an era, from which we can see gorgeous pictures of the social life in a speeilic cia. Tlierefoie, the documentary is a specific treasure of human civilization among the movie family. Mr. \Vhite, an American expert on history, published an article in 揂merica llistory Review? 1989), in which he proposed to found 憀-listoriophygra?, trying to make history accessible to people by means of modern mass media so as to vitalize history. 1-low to deal with history, how to give au account of history that is the question which a worker on documentary has to thee. Not only does it reflect the transition of modern China society, but summarized the developing history of china抯 documentaries, It also shed light on the way of China抯 video media, and launched the beginning research on that. The structure of this article depends oii history dlevelopment and makes up four aspects: I Developing track of China抯 documentaries; 2. The features of documentaries; 3~ The relationship between documentaries and social changes; 4, ~1he forming of the aesthetic feature of documentary. With the development of China抯 society in 20th century, this four aspects line up and appear forward tendency together.
