Any complete writing consists of two parts: its title and its body. So far, most studies have concentrated on syntax of natural sentences concerned with the second part and rare can have been found on the grammar of titles. The importance of titles to writing can never be exaggerated. This study is devoted to the textualisation of Chinese titles, that is, how natural sentences can be adapted to be proper titles. This dissertation is divided into the following seven chapters.Chapter 1 is an introduction to the study, including the data, subject, layout, and aims and purposes.Chapter 2 presents a summary of chapter 3, 4, 5 and 6, showing the author's comprehensive comprehension of titles in terms of their nature, character and textualisation. Specially, the paper illustrates, on the one hand, the deictic nature in terms of the relationship between title and content, of the choice of tenses and aspects, of the word order and the word class of titles; and on the other hand, the topicality of title in terms of the title itself, the motivation for the title, the history of the title, and the proposing tendency of the title. The title's ellipsis are also examined in five aspects whereas the title's attractiveness in seven ways. The core of the study textualisation of titles is put forward here and is further analyzed in light of motivation and means.Chapter 3 specifically deals with the implication structure. The discussion covers parallel structure implication, and isolated structure implication, incomplete structure implication, clausal implication and the implication for some special structures.Chapter 4 is devoted to the analysis of ellipsis in titles in terms of the two Chinese functors "liao", "de ", and Chinese "quantity particles".Chapter 5 discusses displacement: the pure pragmatic factors and the requirements for the layout concerned with titles.Chapter 6 concentrates on the special markedness of Chinese titles, including lexical markers, and punctuation markers.Chapter 7 concludes the paper, offering a summary of what have been done in the dissertation and putting prospects for further research in the related field.
