The 'Southern society'(nan she) is an important and nearly the largest literature league in modern literature history. The 'Southern society' is the pioneer of new culture, although its traditional style was criticized by the peoples of new culture . The aim of this article is to explore and represent how 'Southern society' seeking for the delicate balance between tradition and reality, and how they boxed up by the "limits of change". Therefore, this article will discuss this point respectively in 'Complex of National learning (guo xue)', 'Nationalism', 'Choice of Literature' and 'Traditional Personality' as the representation. In these four aspects the 'Southern society' based on the deep national tradition, and meanwhile they are also impacted by the western culture. They were tangling between the desire of change and limits of change. Even in today their experience and lesson are still the reference for the national culture construction.Firstly, the Southern society has deep complex to 'National learning'. As for the tidying up of the traditional culture and the transition of the Chinese learning from modern times to the contemporary age, the 'Southern society' not only contributed greatly by abundant achievements, but also itself has created a large number of readers, and built an atmosphere of national learning and the language in common. The national learning of the Southern society is a renovation in thinking. By re-reading and explanation, the Southern society finished the work of transiting the traditional learning from the ideology of monarchy to the preparation of the political revolutionary. However, the Southern society's research to the national learning did not transform the learning model in modem sense. Before the development of new culture, the greatest renovation is nothing but adding new ideas to the tradition.Secondly, nationalism is the revolutionary banner of the Southern society. At that time Manchu of the Qing Dynasty, as a parasitical folk, had already destroyed the principal of 'Mutual Survive', therefore the anti-Manchu revolution had rapidly developed. Through succeeding the consciousness of civilization the nation, and bearing the historical memory of the severe race conflict, the Southern society formed revolutionary ideology based on nationalism. Thereby, the Southern society excavated the national history and culture in all aspects. Meantime they also actively connected the history and reality together, and made their idea into a speech to the practical revolution. While inheriting the tradition, the Southern society did not simply revive the ethical enmity and the traditional view of respecting the Han nationality and distaining other races. Instead they reconstructed the historical memory according the revolutionary thinking.Thirdly, revolutionary and traditional are the characteristics of the literature of the 'Southern society'. Many of their literature aspects related to their revolutionary position. However, as the'Southern society' itself, it is revolutionary as well as literary. The standpoint in politics was conflicting with the literary nature. Therefore, many debates inside the 'Southern society' were caused by this. The pursuing of revolution encouraged the 'Southern society' to break through the classical literature traditions in some extent. Whereas them could not exceed the era they were in, they still besieged by the 'Wai! of the Tradition'. They could only look for the balance between the insisting on the tradition and severing the reality. The traditional view of literature, the way of inditing and the pedantry writing pattern are the several obstacles to the literature of the 'Southern society'. But at least the literature of the 'Southern society' contained a new beginning. To the new literature revolutionary, the literature of the 'Southern society' as the prelude of the new literature acted a strange role.
