On Study Of The Function Of Art

This paper proceeds with analyzing the function of art and list my thinking on problems such as the function of art, multi-valued function and value compensations of art, artistic convention, the definition of art, the essence of art style developments, the methods of art research and aesthetic research and so on. Research approach adopted here is theory research combined with case study.This paper falls into three parts. Part 1 is to define the concept of art (aesthetic object) through discussing the multi-valued function and convention of art. The function of art, or the value of art, is plural, so it's unrealistic to carry on a defining of essential doctrine to art. To give an open concept as art a meaningful definition requires us to think in another way so as to result in an open concept in the level of multi-value and artistic convention. Part two is mainly to combine modern novel case that function develops with research on the artistic history and research methods, in perspective of the function of art and convention studied above. And this contains two parts: 1) to make a history research on the essence of artistic styles and development in view of the uneven quality of artistic function development under situation of different artistic convention; 2) to stress a function-form approach of aesthetics study. The last part is to apply theories of the function of arts to introspect some problems in aesthetics study.In a word, this paper involves the function of art and how to classify and define it, and more important, tries to probe, in perspective of artistic function, into a series of basic questions in art research, such as definition of concept of art (aesthetic object), the changes of art styles (art history) and methods of artistic research (methodology) and so on. This paper in a noumenon, multi-valued and historical perspective to re-examine the artistic function questions so as to have a deeper understanding of art itself, and the basis of aesthetics and art study. I believe only in this way emerges a useful theory discipline able to explain realities.
