Modern And Contemporary Chinese Women's Literature And Motherhood

The thesis is apply the concept "mothering" to sort out the central ideology and writing tendency of the Contemporary Chinese Female Literature. The concept of mothering containing diversified explanations not only covers a variegated subject territory, but also means a double concept of consciousness with a symbolic meaning. Especially, the co-existence of two conflicting notions makes it more difficult to define the concept. The woman images explained by men are quite different from those by women themselves. In the most general sense of human kind, mothering is perhaps the most familiar and strangest, so the most difficult point of this thesis may rest with how to finish constructing a new value deciding system from the common sense after reconsidering it carefully.I must point out that mothering contents both the identity of mother and daughter, which in fact offers more sides topic to the simple standpoint of female. However, almost all the present women literature studies focuses only on the literature works from the view of daughter. The texts mainly represent the women view of daughter, and mother is always the indirect narrative object, which just echoes the orientation of feminism. "Motherism" is the concrete mechanism, by which the authority of father suppresses women or mothering. But discussion about the matherism and mothering in the female literature is nearly a blank. Therefore, in this thesis mothering will be the focal point, central view, core-thought and body theme during reconsidering the Contemporary Chinese Women Literature.This thesis chiefly discusses the meaning of the mothering image created by the Contemporary Chinese female writers. First, their spiritual bewilderment and its reason as female writers during the historial turning point : how they faced the reality, what they gained from the reality, what meaning their rebellion contains, and so on. Second, two kinds of the way of female writers in forming mothering : analysis of the body of mothering, creation for the image of rebelling-mothering. We discuss the cultural sense of the mothering during this period from the former, and discuss the internal sense containing in the subject of mothering from the latter. Finally, this thesis discusses the history and the development of the women literature from the 1917s Literature to the New Period Literature: the change of the direction, the deepening of the content, the variety of the relations among female, father and male. Thus this thesis tries to reconsider the value and the meaning of Contemporary' Chinese Women Literature through a new researching angle of view named by mothering.
