It is well known that Shanghai is a city of immigrants. As Shanghai was opened, it haddeveloped rapidIy from a loca1 port to economic center of China and financiaI center of the FarEast as well. ItS great prosperity owes to the accumulative effect of its advantageous geograPhicalposition, peculiar political condition and multiple fiinction. What is more, immigrantS had allplayed on important role in itS development. ImmigrantS have been one of the greatest resources inShanghai. Among them, NingPo natives are a superior community which has had vital effect ondevelopment of Shanghai. They have contributed a lot to Shanghai's prosperity and glory withtheir hard work.In the process of Shanghaifdeveloping from traditional pat'tern to its rnodernization, Ningpoirnmigrants have positive1y taken part in all important events. Long befOre Shanghai was opened,Ningpo merchants, who were famous fOr the popular saying "without Ningpo merchants,withoutmarket",came to Shanghai and engaged in trade .When Shanghai was opened,they had taken theleading position in private bands and modern banks, depending on the abundantfunds .Moreover,they still had gained great success in Shanghai 's foreign trade, modern tradeand local trade .In the field of modern industry,they aIso have contributed their great effOrts.Furthermore, Siming office (@ 0B &f fi ) --the organization of Ningpo natives in Shanghai,andthe committee of Ningpo natives in Shanghai (?&&?P@9% ) -- the earIiest new typeimmigrants organiZaion in Shanghai, have gained great respect for its efforts on protectingnatives' rightS and struggling for our nation's profitS .On the basis of micro factors,such asNingpo immigrants psychological movement and their tremendous contribution, and macrofactors,such as their effects at home and abroad,this paper startS with analyzing the constitutionof Ningpo immigrants. Based on the diachronic study of the immigrants' journey in Shanghai andthe synchronic study of their vital activities in finance, commerce, industry, shippment, educationand the natives organization as well,the author inspects this community's activities and process ofdevelopment from the point of history,anthropology and sociology. It is expected to help ourunderstanding of immigrants phenomenon in the course of Shanghai's urbaniZaion andmodemization, from the aspect of the interaction betWeen immigrantS and society.This paper takes Ningpo immigrantS community as cases stUdy, and offers the theoreticalconception of "immigrants and society" at the same time. With the he1p of history, sociology,anthropology, cultUre stUdy and psychology, it rejectS the change of population caused byimmigration, takes the Ningpo immigrants as the social role of the synthetic community and socialcommunity .On the comprehensive times and social background, it surveys the interactionbetWeen the society of Shanghai and the NingPo immigrants. Not only does it ana1yze NingPoimmigrants' effects on Shanghai --it stresses the social function and effect of immigration, butalso discuss the infiuence of Shanghai society on NingPo immigrantS --it mainly surveys howsocial factors infiuence the act of immigration and immigrants themselves. It aims to unveilexternal function of NingPo immigrants community and their potential effectS in the process ofShanghai modemiZaion, social development, and cultUre transference as well.
