This paper consists of four chapters which are as follows: Chapter one describes the grow up and flux of Mainland and Taiwan's local novel in a common cultural linguistic environment. In retrospect to the historic development of local novel in the 20th century, we can clearly see that there emerges a distinguished landscape in which the local civilization is in the opposition to the modern civilization due to the disintegration of stable social structure of Chinese agriculture. In this chapter, the author is concerned about several aspects which include the grow up and characteristic of Mainland and Taiwan's local novel between the conflict of traditional culture and modern culture, the different cultural meaning of local novel in the different linguistic environment. The author not only notifies the distinct concept of Mainland and Taiwan's local novel due to their different political, cultural and regional background, but combs the similar texts which are created in a similar traditional background of culture, summarizes their specific development laws, and explores their profound cultural meaning. At last the author concludes that Mainland and Taiwan's local novel develops and prospers realistically and naturally in the middle of 1920's largely in virtue of the conflict between the urban culture and the rural culture and their stimulation, the disillusionment of the writers, and the result of the choice of literature in its own development rules as well. The cultural environment and historic condition of this prosperity, as well as the cultural self - consciousness of the local writers, leave behind a lot of instructive and useful experience and topics. According to the understanding of the local novel's cultural meaning, the local writers of Taiwan suggest a wide range of local novel's concept owing to the violent impingement and influence of cultural globalization. As a result of the sharply confrontation each other between the traditional culture and themodern culture, the view of the local novel's creation has been changed in internal quality. Although Mainland's local novel is not in the harmony with Taiwan's local novel in terms of their development, their common characteristic can not be doubted concerning about their cultural connotation, national sensibility, aesthetic experience as well as view of human existence.Chapter two discusses Mainland and Taiwan's local novel's common cultural motifs under the same cultural background. The author puts his emphasis on their distinct glamour besides their common cultural characteristics. After reading numerous texts of Mainland and Taiwan's local novels, the author discovers the similar cultural motif such as pink origin motif, tribulation motif, misery motif, vagrancy motif as well as nostalgia motif. Furthermore, the author also differentiates the distinguished cultural motifs such as orphan motif which is written by Taiwan's writers and heartbroken motif which is written by Mainland's writers. In this chapter the author sums up all the motifs and puts them into four: nostomania motif, orphan motif, pathos motif as well as heartbroken motif. Nostomania motif is originated from Chinese traditional culture and is tightly connected with vagrancy consciousness and wandering consciousness. For Taiwan's local writers, nostomania motif embodies estimable national consciousness and patriotic thought, breaks through unsophisticated nostalgic category and presents a tragic atmosphere through the whole tests. Orphan consciousness is a special national feeling of Taiwan's intellectuals. During the Japanese aggression in Taiwan, a number of intellectuals have some sense of loneliness and inferiority as a result of the discrimination of Japan and the distrust of Mainland. This kind of sense is invasive and widespread among the intellectuals and is called orphan consciousness. In Asian Orphan Wu Zhuoliu describes this kind of orphan consciousness in details. We can find that this kind of orphan consciousness is strongly connected with national consciousness,...
