Causative is an important language category and has drawn attention of many linguists. Most of the previous research on causative ranges from form to meaning and is relatively unsystematic. Until now, there is no similar research on causative from the viewpoint of category. Based on detailed discussion about the essence of causative and its universal characteristics under the direction of cognitive linguistics theory and the framework of the theory of categorization by schemas, this thesis will conduct a systemic and comprehensive research on causative and try to set up the semantic-grammatical category of causative.This thesis consists of three main parts or six chapters, in which the first part is the construction of causative category and the analysis of theory including chapter two; the second part is the semantic analysis of causative essential factor including causative words and participant words; and from chapter four to chapter five is the specific analysis of sub-categories. The content of each chapter is as follows:This thesis consists of six chapters: Chapter One: Introduction.In the first part of the thesis, the context of the research is presented, then significance of the thesis, theories and research methods, framework and main content, some issues for further consideration and materials for reference, etc. are pointed out.Chapter Two: The Construction of Causative Category: From Schemas Semantic Structure to Syntactic Structure.In this chapter, theories on causative and research methods are discussed. A thorough inquiry about image schema is made and semantic structure of causative is analyzed. Then the author try to seek the syntax structure of causative accordingly and thus reveals the essence of causative and the judge standard of causative.Chapter Three: The Language Level of Causative: Causative Words Participant Words and Their Syntax Requirements.In this chapter semantic analysis of causative words and participant words is conducted. Consequently, based on an analysis of the semantic changes of causative words in the causative frame and the semantic features of participant words, the Chinese verb incognitive method and the Chinese sentence in semantic method is classified. After that, It analyzes the semantic change and functional change of causative words and participant words in causative framework.Chapter Four: Subjective Variable and The Sentence Pattern of Causative.It is mainly the study about sub-categories of causative induced by subjective variable, including positive-direction causative and opposite-direction causative, sequential causative and composed causative, subject attribution, object attribution and event attribution. And their grammatical forms and the influence of variable on people's cognition are also analyzed.Chapter Five: Objective Variable and The Sentence Pattern of Causative.It is mainly the study about sub-categories of causative induced by objective variable, including conscious causative and unconscious causative, outer-oriented causative and inner-oriented causative, positive causative and negative causative, general-force causative, the force degree of causative. Each sub-category's restricting factors and grammatical forms are discussed in detail.Chapter Six: Summarization.In the last chapter of the thesis, the points of view or conclusions, distinguishing features and some issues that need for further consideration is summarized.The appendix includes a comprehensive review of progress in causative research causative verb of classes Vb1 and Vb2 technical terms and diagram.In a word, the main achievements in this dissertation are as follows:1. It puts forward causative is a semantic relational category and adopts the thinking of categorization by schemas: from image schema, semantic structure to syntactic structure.2.
