| "Appearance-spirit theory" is not only a very ancient topic of conversation but also a new one after going through so long time to Chinese literature and art, and it still exists in many worlds of literature and art up until today. Thinking and studying it from the ancient times to the present will be a valuable attempt to establishing of Chinese modern theory system of literature and art with national distinctive features.By means of tracing the origin of the appearance-spirit theory, this thesis thinks the "substance—way "relation theory of early stage Taoist is its theory source. Appearance-spirit theory began to become ripe in philosophy and transform to human being up to Zhuang Zi; After its transforming,there was a philosoply struggle about the problem that"appearance or spirit is the root", the struggle stretched about one thousand years, and came to the end of a stage until the Confucianism and Buddhism theology was defeated and materialism won the victory.In this controversy, the Taoist and xuanxue theoreticians found the secluced paten by which appearance-spirit led to literature and art in the theory corner that "appearance spirit is more important", and appearance-spirit began to transform to the worlds of literature and art. It first transform into art appearance-spirit theory, including mainly music appearance-spirit theory, fine arts appearance-spirit theory and penmanship appearance-spirit theory. It's necessary to point out that appearance-spirit ideas of Taoist exerted more and more significant influence on ancient art theory of our country in the course of transforming up till it became leading factor. Because of the special relation between literature and art, appearance-spirit theory got into literature world from art world, the aesthetic perspective of attaching more important to similarity in spirit than formal resemblance became main current, so we can see the specialfunction of appearance-spirit ideas of Taoist.The appearance-spirit theory with distant source and long stream showed an common grace in the literature history of Chinese modern times and present age. First of all, great masters and famous writers or artist still successfully put the appearance-spirit theory into creating practice, for example, there are Ai-qing in poem world, Zhu zi-qing in prose world, Lu-xun in novel world, Chao-yu in opera world, Qi bai-shi in fine arts world, etc;the next, the theory of'loose appearance and not loose spirifbecomes a great bright point to the theory constriction of Chinese prose in the modern times and the present age, its aesthetics value can't underrate.It will be expection of the thesis that Chinese appearance-spirit theory became useful resources of establishing of Chinese modern literature and art system with national distain chive features.
