| Analyses in a historical perspective indicate that the formation of any style of design directly reflects the politics, economy, culture and socio-psychology of the society of its time. As far as China's interior design is concerned, the history of the changes and development of styles may also be regarded, in a way, as a history of the development of interior design as a special field. This dissertation strives to thoroughly track the development of interior design in modern and contemporary China through analyses and discussions based on research findings.In the course of the development of interior design in modern and contemporary China, the continuation and development of traditional Chinese style has been accompanied by the spread and influence of Western ideas. Their interaction and interfusion is the mainstream of the development. Chapter Two of this dissertation focuses on the history of the development of traditional interior design of China prior to 1840, when foreign influences entered China. This discussion covers the philosophy, formal characteristics and decorative methods of traditional interior design and its relationship to the traditional system of construction management and interior design.Chinese entered modern history with the eruption of the Opium War in 1840. Thereafter, the impact of Western architecture, culture and thoughts pushed forward the style of Chinese traditional architecture and interior design to a new course of development. Chapter Three discusses in detail the historical background of the introduction of Western ideas of design into China and the way they spread as well as their impact and influence upon Chinese traditional interior design.
