Spring And Autumn Inscriptions Font Evolution Of The Research

The Spring-and-Autumn-and-Warring-States period is the key one when the style of the Chinese characters developed, of which the development of the bronze inscription is the important content. In this dissertation, 3,025 epigraphs in bronze inscription of this period were collected, from which 1,293 pieces were selected to be the objects of study. Mainly adopting the research method of Chinese character style, and referring to the achievements of the fields of the study of Chinese character organization, calligraphy, history, archaeology, paleography, etc, this dissertation comprehensively studies the development of the bronze inscription in the Spring-and-Autumn-and-Warring-States period. By analyzing the development phenomenon of bronze inscription in different times and places, and by comparing the styles of the characters engraved or written on bones or tortoise shells, wood or bamboo slips, silk, jades, and so on, this dissertation also tries to analyze the nature of the Chinese characters and its changes during this period, to research the laws and causes of such changes, and to probe into the position and functions of the changes in the whole history of the development of the Chinese characters.The text consists of five parts, they are the Introduction, a General Introduction of the research into the Chinese character style and the research into the bronze Inscription style of the Spring-and-Autumn-and-Warring-States period, the selection and arrangement of the materials concerning the bronze Inscription style in the Spring-and-Autumn-and-Warring-States period, the development of the Inscription style in the Spring-and-Autumn-and-Warring-States period, the theoretic Interpretation of the development of the bronze Inscription style in the Spring-and-Autumn-and-Warring-States period.In this paper, a rather detailed process in which the bronze inscription style developed from seal character to official character is described, the different means and their interaction of the convenience and standardization in the process of the character style development are analyzed, the natures and functions of various bronze inscription styles are judged. The paper also generalizes the features of bronze inscription styles, namely, the styles are diverse and some of them are much more flourishing;from the angle of time, the development is continuous butfeatures stages;from the angle of space, there exist generality and individuality simultaneously. On the basis of the above analyses, this thesis reveals the internal causes of the development of bronze inscription style in the Spring-and-Autumn-and-Warring-States period lie in the interaction between the inner structure of Chinese character and the character styles, and that among the convenience and standardization within each style. In addition, the development of bronze inscription styles is greatly influenced by the shape of the bronze vessel, politics, economy, thoughts, etc. The paper also points out that the development of the bronze inscription styles is a key link in the process of the transition from seal character to official character.To reflect the collection and arrangement of the research materials for this paper, some tables are attached after the text.
