The relationship between Turkish nationalism and Islam has been very comprehensiv.It has experienced about three stages.During the first stage,faced with the invation of western powers,Turkish muslim had been forced to think about the faults among muslim society and rethink the traditional muslim thought of politics,economics,nation,the relationship between Islam and politics,the feeedom of man,legitimity,an so on. Many muslim intellectuals begain to realize the nessesarity of learning from the west and making reformatiom about traditional muslim society and Islam. A group named reformists or Islamists appeared for the first time in the modern history of Ottoman emperial .Islamists cried for innovation in many fields,they were eagered to revive the energy which muslim possesed during the Goldern Time when muslim were strong and powerful.To some Islimists,the very modern concept of nation which borrowed from the west was very useful,they begain to use this to describe muslim as an unique community which were different from Christian people,especially on the cultural level.When time came to the middle of ninety century,another western thought were taken up by some Ottoman people,for example,teachers,reporters,statesmen,and officers,this thought were known as nationalism.Some Turkish recognize themselves as a modern nation,and asked for a Turkish nation state,or a state controled by Turkish.It is not surprised to see that during this period from 1850s to 1910s Turkish Islamists and nationalists had many thing in common,depite the fact that they were two different fronts and developed respectively.Turkish nationalists addmited that Islam be the main component of Turkish national culture ,and Islamists supported nationalists through their writing and speeches on many occasions.But every thing was changed when the Turkish Republic was founded in 1923.The Turkish nationlists lead by Mustafa Kemal took ruthless measures to suppresse Islam and Islamists so that a modern secular state as the west be founded,the better relationship everbefore between Islam and Turkish nationalism was completely...
