Since the Opium War, china has gone through a clear transition from traditional society to modern society. In the course of history, the scenery of literature which is constructed all the time around the leading clue of historical transformation has been located the centre of the literary world over 100 years. This kind of literature makes expounding the meaning of historical transformation as own duty, and tries to realize its own value from this. Undoubtedly, this kind of literature has its own unique historical value and literary value. But at the same time, another kind of literature which embodies modern humanism has already formed the special scenery of literature. It enriches the development of Chinese literature in the 20th century together with the main literature in a supplementary , coordinated way. "Modern humanism" in this dissertation particularly refers to the cultural inclination which conflicts with scientific rationality and human nature alienation caused by modern science, commerce and technological industry in the process of modernization in China. This kind of literature which has modern humanism inclination is paid attention to in this dissertation, and Shi Tuo's literary works is discussed exactly in terms of this theory.The dissertation consists of four chapters.Chapter one probes into the modern humanistic inclination in Shi Tuo's literature which is shown in a dilemma whether to pursue a historical target or return to home village. As to modern, "nostalgia" has already lost its natural and primitive character day by day and becomes a classical proposition of "modernity". Its consciousness to modern humanism has been shown in criticizing modernization in terms of aesthetic modernity and forming a face-off relation with historic modernity. As to Chinese modern intellectuals in the period of history transformation, they all struggle hard in the dilemma and endure the stress of break caused by the great discrepancy between village and city, tradition and modern, eastern culture and western culture. "Nostalgia" doesn't merely mean being incompatible with the city or returning to home village for Shi Tuo.
