There are many researches of the experts at home and abroad on comparativestudies on the space of Chinese and Western traditional paintings. However they alllack of a systematic study especially on the reasons of the characteristics of the spaceexpression in the traditional Chinese and Western drawing. This essay focuses on theangle of the painting space expression to explore the similarities and differencesbetween Chinese and Western traditional paintings based on the research result of thepredecessors.The research shows that Chinese traditional paintings pursuit in the image spaceof the mixture of subjects and objects on the space expression. They are flowing.While Western traditional paintings pursuit in the vivid illusion of the realityspace. They are motionless relatively. Meanwhile Chinese and Western traditionalpaintings have some similarities on space expression. The main reason lies in theeastern thoughtful style and the idea of entity between nature and man, Chinesecharacters and calligraphy while in West, it lies in the deep-rooted "copy idea" andWestern thoughtful style, ancient Greek carving arts, etc.
