The Chinese May Forth new poetry has a quite close relationship with the American poetry. By combing and analyzing the related data, the dissertation shows that the American poetry exerts a good many influences upon the Chinese May Fourth new poetry based on their mutual communication.To all documentation, China translated and introduced much less American poems compared with that of English, French, German, Russian and Belgian etc during the May Fourth Movement Period. Does this mean that the American influenced the Chinese May Fourth new poetry less?The dissertation regards that American contemporary poetry represented by Whitman and the American New Poetry Movement represented by the Imagists had a great influence upon the Chinese May Fourth new poetry. Drove by active communication of poetry, personnel and culture of then historical and cultural context, the American poetry's influences upon the May Fourth new poetry may be catalyzed not only by the Chinese translation of the American poetry and the reading of it, but also by the influences of American spiritual culture and real life etc. exerted to the Chinese students studying abroad.Firstly, the dissertation discusses the media through which the American poetry influenced the Chinese May Fourth new poetry, that is, the text media which refers to the translated and introduced American poetry, and the subject media which refers to the Chinese students studied in American at that time. The dissertation gives a thorough analysis to the latter.Secondly, the dissertation pays special attention to the concrete matters of the influences that the American poetry exerted upon the May Fourth new poetry, which is a key part of this study.
