'The code of the relationship between nations and religions: reveal of the spirit of religious solidarity in Chinese history' is a dissertation written by Cao Xing, a Ph.D. student from Central University for Nationalities and a professor researching at Department of World Ethno-National Studies Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He has been studying the outlet of national religious conflicts in the world, the experience of resolving relationship between nations and religions in Chinese history, the orderliness of mutual moving between nations and religions, and based upon these, he generalizes the spirit of religious solidarity. It is of great significance to seek history developmental tract of the relationships among nations and religions and to study the spirit of religious solidarity and evolutional orderliness from conflicts to harmony, how to avoid errors in dealing with a nation's and a religion's clashes in order to probe into the ways of solving the problems among relationships between nations and religions such as from violence to peace or vice versa. It is greatly important not only to many countries full of national religious clashes but also to those peaceful counties or areas with potential possibilities of conflicts. On this field, at present, the studies by scholars in all countries are only carried on in terms of their ethnic point of view or religious point of view. Therefore, the studies have not formed a overall picture, in which they go just like two irrelevant things. Some of them have been attempted only to describe the phenomena from their point of view, but few books have gone deeper to probe in essence on studying the relationships between nations and religions so far. It can be imagined that the studies are full of challenges such as incredible difficulties, too many subjects and demanding methodologies. Previous scholars study unilaterally the relationship between nations and religions from the Religion science or the Ethnology. Many scholars on Religion science probe on the relationships' problems from religion, but can not study deeply on nations problems due to the knowledge about the Ethnology, or vice versa. I can affirm that these problems are very impassable obstacles before many scholars on nation and religion, so they have to stop going further themselves. In the probing process on them, I apply four areas in my research in terms of methodology (Ethnology, Religion science, Philosophy, and Historiography). I had been studying Philosophy for more than 10 years (1982-1994) and publishing more than 1.5 million words, issues on nations more than 11 years (1994-2005) and publishing nearly a million words. In my process on studying nations, I come to apply empirical ways more than library-based ways in research. This dissertation comprises of two parts. The first part (consisting of 6 chapters) focuses mainly on empirical study and the second part (consisting of 6 chapters) aimed at theoretical study. The first two chapters analyze the outlet and focus on national religious clashes in the world and further the causes why hotspots in the world move into Asia and why ancient Chinese created harmonious community in three dynasties (Xia, Shang and Zhou). I venture to put forward a new point of view that cultivates the causes for harmonious community in which accompanies with harmonious relationships between nations, between religions, between nation(s) and religion(s). So from chapter 3 to 6, I probe into several relationships between Confucianism and Buddha, between Confucianism and Islam, between Confucianism and Christianity, between Buddha and...
