On Eagleton's Theory Of Ideology

Terry Eagleton is one of the most influential public intellectuals in recent years and the academic personage who quite received the dispute. Because of his radical political attitude, dialectic thinking style, the "guarded" theoretical paradigm and changeable and ambiguous text expression, Eagleton study has no due attention and development in academe at home and abroad. This dissertation is not to a overall discussion of Eagleton and his thought, but aims at the study on his theory of ideology which is the core of his thought. So the study will reveal the philosophy background and unique characteristic of this theory, and offer one cut-in point to continue a case study of Eagleton philosophy and macroscopical understanding of western Marxism. Basing on the version of Eagleton's theory, the dissertation strives to carry on a philosophical reading on Eagleton's theory of ideology in structure systematicness, logic ductility and system integrality. And it will reconstruct his text while combing his theoretical logic in an all-round way.Therefore, the dissertation consists of three parts: introduction, text and conclusion.Firstly, it mainly involves background reviewing about the occurring of Eagleton's theory of ideology and analyzing of his theoretical characteristic, expounds the current situation of Eagleton study and the writing route of the dissertation in introduction part.Secondly, the text part is divided into six seals.First of all, by introducing Eagleton's life and academic course, comparing with the relevant theory resources, it explains the emergence of Eagleton's theory of ideology on the double aspects of actual life and theory text in order to set up the coordinate with related theories. Second, with clarifying the concept of the "ideology", it will distinguish Eagleton's attitude which is a kind of strategy to this concept. That is to say, Eagleton not only insists on its negativity, but also regards neutral color. Then it will be as a logical starting point of his whole theory of ideology. Then, through analyzing "literature is the production of ideology", it investigates his literature ideology theory and points out the theoretical relationship among Eagleton, Marx, Benjamin and Macherey. And then, via the retrospect and study of the term of "aesthetics", Eagleton's treatise on the relation between the aesthetics and body is probed. Namely, through discussing Eagleton theory attempt at rebuild body discourse, it expounds and reaffirms his practice philosophy position which is based upon a sensibility life. Moreover, with discussing modernity that is regarded as a whole historical phenomenon and dominant discourse of ideology to Eagleton, it probes into the modernity issue in the field of vision of his theory of ideology by the thought which tries to criticize and rebuild the of modernity in ideology criticism. Differing from the modernity criticism of post-modern philosophers which is lack of a positiveand upward power, the dissertation has expounded that Eagleton has shown the possibility to rebuild it by the rethinking modernity under maintaining Marxist basic position. Finally, the dissertation investigates the value and limitation of Eagleton's theory.Thirdly, it briefly reviews and summarizes Eagleton's theory of ideology in conclusion part.
