The overall scope of this dissertation is to provide an account of speech events around us which is rich and colorful from the viewpoint of cognitive, structure, and functional theories, that is, to present views of cognitive quantitative and analyses of speech expressions. The dissertation has 8 chapters and a preface with more than 180 thousands Chinese characters in total. The preface consists in the objects and significance of the research, provides a background of the auther's main idea, and suggests the concept 'quantity' and the point of view of cognitive quantitative about speech expressions. The body of the dissertation is composed of chapter 1-7 and should be divided into two parts.Part 1 consists of chapter 1-3, with epistemological statements on the interaction between physical being, psychological being, and linguistic being. There are three contents in the viewpoint of cognitive quantitative. Each occurs in one chapter. The discussion of interaction among matter, mind and meaning provides the first content of the view of cognitive quantitative, that is, it is impossible to cut down the relations among entities, thoughts, and languages. The expression of language is the necessary constituents of cognitive world, not only tricks and instruments. The supposition of Three-argument Interaction of section 1 suggests an image of Three-arguments Circle, i.e. matter-mind-meaning (M). The elements of every M (physical being, psychological being, and linguistic being) are world-what-word (W), system-statement-structure(S), and constitution-communication-conversation(C), i.e. M = W + S + C. The investigation of reaction of human being (M1) to objective world (Mo) suggests that subjectivities of human psychology is the source of linguisticinnovation and cannot be ignored. The two-direction observations, i.e. M0 <…—> M1,have equivalent one and un-equivalent one. Section 3 presents a model of three-phrase about the history of thoughts: osmosis which equates the objects and the subjects (P0 = P1 ) , analogy which connects one object with others (P0 —>P1) , and narration which builds objects with subjective signs. The idea of interaction between expression and thought provides the second content of the view of cognitive quantitative, that is, it proposes a process ofconceptualization from physical objects to psychological objects, and regards this process as the source of meaning and the instruments of innovation. The quantification of concepts is unceasing. Section 1 clarifies the possibility of two-direction conceptualization (M1 <—> M2)with a theory of transition from the law of identity to oneness and from oneness to synonymy. The property and quantity divided from the factors of a concept provide an explanation on the semantic ambiguity, i.e. the procreation of meaning (W = P + Q = ( Pa1 + Pa2 + Pa3 ...) + ( Qa1 + Qa2 + Qa3 ...), and gives evidences for the rich and colorful expressions. The idea of comparison of differences in chapter 3 provides the third content of the view of cognitive quantitative, that is, it is the four mechanism that induce changing of objects : analogy mechanism (W = W'), metonymy mechanism (W —〉 W') , implication mechanism (W —〉 w' + w" + w"' ...), and integration mechanism (W = Wa + Wb + ...) .They together compose of the mechanism of language for expressions.Part 2 consists of chapter 4-7, with experiential analysis of language application, which can be analyzed from general theory, semantics, structures, and pragmatics. Each occurs in one chapter. The general analyze in chapter 4 suggests that the analysis of quantity in the view of cognitive quantitative is intermediates between macroscopic and microscopic analysis, and different from them. The main categories analyzed in this chapter are 'comparison of variables' and 'invent and application of quantities'.The semantic-rhetoric analyze in chapter 5 takes 'conceptual structure', which is the essential of quantitative meaning, as the object of semantic analyzing in the view of quantitative: meaning is composed of several conceptual structures like quantity of number, quantity of concept, and quantity of integrations etc.The structure-rhetoric analyze in chapter 6 takes 'narrative measure', which is the essential of quantitative structures, as the object of structure analyzing in the view of quantitative: structure is composed of several narrative measures, including quantity of punctuations, quantity of sentences, quantity of images, quantity of styles, and quantity of viewpoints etc.The pragmatic-rhetoric analyze in chapter 7 takes 'modal function', i.e. 'categorization' modality expressing pragmatic meaning, as the object of pragmatic analyze in the view of quantitative: pragmatics is composed of several culture modalities, including modality of categories, modality of constructions, and modalityof strategies etc.Chapter 8 is the conclusion, summarizing the main ideas of the dissertation, and further topics to be discussed in future.
