Academic Research And Concern For Nation: A Study Upon The Journal Of Historical And Geographical Society And The Concerned Group

The Journal of Historical and Geographical Society was published by the Historical and Geographical Seminar of NHNS(Nanjing Higher Normal School ,later called Southeast University), while lasting longer and making greater inflence than any other acdmical periodical on History in 1920s. It had its own editor group, author group and its own standpoint on acdemy and reality. All of these were lasting in the subsequent periodicals, such as The Journal of History and Geography, The Journal of History and The Journal of Guofeng.They made up of an important part of the thinking world of modern China.In this thesis, the author puts this group in NHNS of 1920s,in all kinds of reations to trace the personer venation, to review their expression on acdemy and reality, and to discuss their complex of cultural ntionalism after the May 4^th movement.This thesis consists of the introduction, the body and the conclusion.The introduction mainly expounds the current situation of this monograph, and the author's trace of thinking and problems to solve.There are five chapters in the body. The first two chapters makes a general review upon the Journal of Historical and Geographical Society and the group around it in the multidimensional background of the NHNS (or, SU), making full use of interrelated archives, diaries and other material. Chapter 1 mainly disscusses the edition, publication and ending of the Journal of Historical and Geographical Society, including a brief introduction of its main content and its subsequent periodicals. Chapter 2 maily traces the constitution of the group and the relationship between them, including their energetic compus life and activity in other periodicals of the NHNS (or, SU). The following three chapters mainly discuss their thinking on History science, Chinese history and the education of history and geography, by analyzing their expression and practice in NHNS (or, SU). The author's purpose is to reveal their efforts on building the New History of China, elucidating Chinese tradition and cultivating the new national citizen.The conclution is a brief summary of the thesis. It points out there is a kind of cultural nationalism complex in their hunting after the right combination of Chinese tradition and modernity. In a sense ,their thinking is also partly representing the spirit of that time.
