Based on Landscape Architecture, Heritage Conservation, Urban Planning and Architecture etc, this dissertation did some researches on constructing the Industrial Heritage Corridor of Jiangnan part of the Great Canal, where the modern industries had been well developed, and discussed the principles and methods systematically on how to choose, identify and protect regional industrial heritage.First of all, this dissertation defined the concepts of the Canal Industrial Landscape and the Canal Industrial Heritage, and considered that the Canal Industrial Landscape was an important type of the Cultural Landscapes, which was shaped by the Canal Industry and relative activities in different historical periods. As an integrated system, the Canal Industrial Landscape had some relationship with the route of the Canal, and they shared the same historical theme and experienced the same process of the Canal Industry development. There were three aspects to interpret the relationship between the elements of Canal Industrial Landscape and the Canal itself. In specifically, the first one was to use the Canal as the water resource (correlation of function), the second was the position near the Canal (correlation of space) and the third one was people or events which had been related to the history of Canal Industry (correlation of history). The Canal Industrial Heritage was the valuable parts of the Canal Industrial Landscape which could be identified through using the principle of three relationships mentioned above. After the analyzing and summarizing the theory of Industrial Heritage Conservation and Heritage Corridor, the paper developed the research levels and the fundamental framework of the Canal Industrial Heritage Corridor. Specifically speaking, the Industrial Heritage Corridor was a hierarchy controlled system, which could be divided into five levels, namely, the industrial heritage area, the industry town, the historical industrial gathering district, the industrial factory including the related institution and the industrial building. The study followed the basic sequence as subject identification, resource investigation and heritage registration, analysis and evaluation, pattern Construction and Implementation policy. After the concepts being identified and the basic theoretical framework being established, it follows the case study of the Industrial Heritage in Jiangnan Canal.Firstly, based on the analysis of the background of the development of Jiangnan Canal Industry, the paper found that the linear region along the Canal was another core area in Chinese modern industry history besides Shanghai, so-called the Birthplace of Chinese National Industry; it was also the industrial center of Flour making, Cotton Textile, Reeling and Silk in Chinese National Industry, and meanwhile, the expansion channel of the Chinese national industry to Jiangnan and the downstream region of Yangtze River. The Canal Industry was extremely important in Chinese Industry history, which left a lot of important Industrial Heritage during different periods. Secondly, after analyzing factors which impact the appearance and development of the Canal Industry and the recovering of the historical canal industrial landscape, the paper discussed the original modes and distribution patterns of the Canal Industry in a further detail. Through analyzing the relationship between the historical industrial landscape and the Canal, it could be found that there existed a strong relationship between the origin and development of the Canal Industry and the Canal (mainly in the correlation of function), which means the Canal was the key driver of the regional industrial landscape. The paper then set down some specific practical register standards with the considering of the three relationships between Industrial Heritage and the Canal, and checked out which had been the qualified Industrial Heritage in this area. Then, the paper analyzed the types and composition of the Canal Industrial Heritage from two different levels, which were factories with some related institutions and industrial buildings. According to the analyzing, the study found that regardless of the types, quantities and distribution, the canal industrial heritage was highly typical and representative. Then it come to the next step to establish an evaluation system of the Industrial Heritage, and the study divided them into four classes to evaluate, which were the Industrial buildings, the Industrial factories with the related institutions, the historical Industrial gathering areas and the industry towns along the Canal. Finally, the planning pattern of the Canal Industrial Heritage Corridor was discussed based on the analysis and evaluation above, and the thesis provided some implementation strategies of conservation, utilization in four levels, including the integrated corridor protection pattern, the main towns protection pattern, the development of the region of the historical industry and the protection and reutilization of the important industrial buildings. The innovations of the study are as follows. Firstly, the paper found out the crucial relationship between the origin and development of the Canal Industrial Landscape and the Canal based on the analysis of the development of the Canal Industrial history, the origin mode of the Canal Industrial and the distribution of the Pattern. Secondly, the paper brought forward the approach of constructing Canal Industrial Heritage Corridor, in order to achieve the goal of the integrated protection and utilization of the Jiangnan Canal Industrial Heritage. The theory and the method in this case will be an important model, which can be used in the study related to regional protection of Industrial Heritage.
