This study is principally concerned with Chinese portraiture before A.D.1000. Portraiture was already a socially practice in the Six Dynasties(A.D.220—581) and the development of a cultural appreciation for distinctive personalities had important consequences for the art of portraiture. The trend of portraiture toward a more vivid realization of appearance reached its heights during Sui(A.D.581—618),Tang(A.D.618—907) to the brief Five Dynasties(A.D.907—960) period and was on the decline after the rise of the scholar-amateur school of painting.
