The final purpose of education is for students' development. Teacher and his structure of knowledge affect not only the implementation of teaching but also the learning of students. With more emphasis on foreign language teaching in education field, foreign language teacher becomes to be one of the focuses of such studies. With the generous demand to the inter-disciplinary talent, college English teachers face new problems and various challenges after China's entry into WTO. What knowledge structure a college English teacher owns will have a great influence on students' future development. With the further reforming of college English teaching, college English teachers become one of the key factors to influence the development of college English teaching. Whether the reform can be successfully put in practice , the construction of new knowledge of college English teachers will play a very important role.Documents, investigations, statistics are adopted to examine the structure. Based on the literature review, this research uses the research methods and the research results on teachers' training from the field of Education and Psychology to discuss the structure of knowledge of college English teachers. This research adopts methods of case study and narrative inquiry to study knowledge structure and development of an outstanding college English and new college English teachers. In order to get the views of experienced teachers from the macro perspective, the researcher designs a questionnaire for the structure of knowledge of college English teachers and discussed structure of the teacher's knowledge based on the survey. The original information and data of research are got through the college English teachers selecting four universities of different types in Heilongjiang Province.Based on the literature review, the qualitative research and the result of the survey, according to the result of the survey, the structure of knowledge has been concluded as the pyramidal structure. From the top to the bottom, according to the level of importance, the structure of knowledge is divided into vitally needed knowledge, important knowledge and necessary knowledge. The main decisions of this research are: the frame model of teacher knowledge is put forward and illustrated. That is, the knowledge frame of college English teachers is made up of four parts: Subject Content Knowledge, Intercultural Knowledge, Knowledge of Learners, Knowledge of Contexts, Pedagogical Content Knowledge. Pedagogical content knowledge is the practical knowledge based on the other four. About College English Reform and the development of teacher knowledge, the research illustrates the knowledge direction of college English teachers in the future is ESP knowledge and inexorable trend of college English teachers changing into ESP teachers.This thesis is made up of the following parts:Chapter One, introduce the research of teacher knowledge in China and other countries. It analyses and thinks about them from history and real-life. Chapter Two, give the theoretical basis of the research and related research on it. Then Chapter Three probe the structure of teacher knowledge and the causes, principles and value of establishing knowledge structure through case study and narrative inquiry. Next, Chapter Four advance the principles and strategies on how to optimize the knowledge structure of college English teachers. Finally, look ahead on the future development of teacher knowledge and put forward a viewpoint of college English teachers changing into ESP teachers.The knowledge structure of college English teachers is a complicated and arduous research problem. This research is a preliminary discussion of it. And more researchers are showing their interest in this area. Meanwhile, because of the time and conditions limits, the depth of the discussion and the research methods have been limited, therefore, this research will be followed by more discussions and concerns in the future.
