The ancient Chinese calligraphy as decoration is defined as a decoration which is appended to the ware or arranged in a certain space using the Chinese calligraphy or its artistic works as elements. It is used not only to express the calligraphically practical function of the Chinese characters, nor the appreciation of the calligraphical art, it mainly functions as a decoration. The dissertation presents an interdisciplinary research by closely combining the Chinese calligraphy and decoration to explain the different decorative roles on certain occasions the traditional Chinese calligraphy plays in different historical periods of time and comprehensively discuss the paths and general laws in the development of the ancient Chinese calligraphy as decoration. The discussion will help to provide a new view for the decoration art research and also present different reflections on the artistic creation of the calligraphy, and its displays and periodic changes in space.The first chapter, based on the background of the traditional Chinese culture, gives some explanations, which are the deep reasons why the Chinese calligraphical decoration spreads all over different ages and occasions. The author believes that the form of the Chinese characters is the prerequisite of the decoration of ancient Chinese calligraphy, that the courtesy and auspice in the ancient Chinese culture is the prime mover and the folk bases of the decoration of Chinese calligraphy, that the scholar's view on the calligraphy sublimes the decoration of Chinese calligraphy artistically.Based on the first chapter and from the forms and aesthetics of the decoration of Chinese calligraphy, Chapter Two classifies the formal structures and the aesthetic features of the decoration of Chinese calligraphy in the ancient wares, and makes a further research on its cultural characteristics and techniques. The chapter also focuses on the timing and local features of the decoration of Chinese calligraphy in the ancient wares.Chapter Three mainly discusses the relation between the chirography and position of decorative stamps and the form of stele character and grain decoration, emphasizing the principles of the decoration of Chinese calligraphy in the steles and coverings and the transformations of the Chinese characters in the ancient stone inscriptions. The chapter also discusses the particularity and significance of the calligraphical decoration in the cliff inscriptions on the Chinese landscape culture.Chapter Four investigates the decoration of Chinese calligraphy in the ancient architecture, discussing the formal developments, and the rules, the cultural and social characteristics of the plane and space structure. The research here correlates the deep influence of the cultural view of calligraphy discussed in the first chapter on the decoration of ancient Chinese calligraphy.In short, the dissertation gives prominence to the charm and variations of the implications of the ancient Chinese calligraphy in the decoration, emphasizing the following as the formal beauty of the calligraphical decoration and its structural principles, the developments of the form and structure in the Chinese character which is used as decoration. The dissertation wholly presents the aesthetic features and cultural background of the calligraphical decoration in the different periods in ancient times. The author thinks that the investigation on the Tao of the decoration of ancient Chinese calligraphy means to study the Tao of the life of the ancient Chinese nationality, the Chinese art and the traditional Chinese culture.
