| Based on Toni Morrison's novels, against the background of three cultures—American culture, black culture and women's culture, this dissertation makes a systematical analysis of her religious views from four aspects, namely her view of God, Sin, Atonement and Love. This dissertation assumes that Toni Morrison's religious views are of remarkable racial and sexual politics, formed against the background of three cultures—American culture, black culture and women's culture, with"love"as the core and the ultimate orientation. From the whole process of the development of Toni Morrison's religious views, it can be seen that in large part, she transforms traditional Christianity and even subverts it in terms of view of God, Sin and Atonement, but she conforms to Christianity in terms of Love. Through insistent exploration and meditation, Toni Morrison finally recognizes a genuine God and a genuine religion. The former is the God of eternal love, and the latter the religion of love. She believes that love is the solution to racial, sexual and cultural conflicts, and with love the barrier between sexes, races and cultures can be destroyed and harmonious relationship between sexes, races and individuals can be established, which is the author's primary concern and ideal as well. So Toni Morrison's religious views are of universal significance for they go beyond the boundary of nation, race and culture. |
