Mr, Shi Shijie, a famous poet of Taiwan, and Qiu Fengjia, Xu Nanyin, are regarded as the Three Giants in the poem circle of Taiwan. In 1876 after he was awarded the title of JINSHI ( a successful candidate in the imperial court examination), Mr Shi was promoted to work as a secretary in the central government. However, due to his lack of interest in official career, he resigned and returned home to be the head of three academies, namely Baisha Academy at Zhanghua, .Congwen Academy at Tainan, and Haidong Academy. Yet before the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895,he became an official consultant of Taiwan Province government under the governor of Liu Minchuan. After Taiwan was occupied by the Japanese invaders in 1895, he left Taiwan for the mainland China and became Tongpan (a local government supervisor who was responsible directly to the central government).In 1917, he began to work in Fujian Annal Compiling Bureau. Shi Shijie was an active member of Shuzhuan Poets club as well as the dean of Taiwan Poet circle, whose literary works represents the highest level of those in Taiwan when it was just established as a province.When Shi Shijie was the head of Haidong Academy, Qiu Fengjia, Xu Nanying, Wan Chunyuan, Zheng Pengyun were the students there. Beside Shi Shijie, his father Mr Shi Qiongfang and his uncle Mr. Shi Zhaocheng. had been the heads of Haidong Academy. Both Shi Shijie and his father were JINSHI, which was the sole case in the history of Taiwan. With such a family background as well as being the head of the best academy in Taiwan, Shi Shijie enjoyed a noble social statue .He is the most complicated and most important figure among those Taiwan poets who were leaving for the mainland China, which determines its value of research..This research was based on sorting and analyzing the vast amount of reliable original materials, including Shi's literary works, works collections of the writers who lives in the same historical period as Shi's and those comments and reviews on Shi Shijie from such books as history of literature and literature criticism. By study Shi Shijie, this dissertation makes an exploration on the common journey those intellectuals of that time experienced as a whole. This dissertation consists of six chapters written in accordance with the theory of cultural Poetics and the method of Reflective Sociology proposed by P.Bourdieu), Chapter I introduces Shi's family background. Chapter II describes the imperial court examination and analyses the causes of Shi's resignation and returning home. Chapter III focuses on Shi's service in Taiwan, describing his purposes of touring around the central and north parts of Taiwan as well as his contribution to Taiwan in terms of education, culture, poet's club, and politics. Chapter IV. deals with his vagrant life after leaving for the mainland, explaining the causes, describing the journey he had experienced from giving up literature to engage in business, then giving up business to politics and finally returned to literature. Chapter V discusses his contact with the literature circle of Japan and analyses its objective and subjective causes. Chapter VI expounds the influence of Shi's literary works in Taiwan with the conclusion that Shi is a writer recognized and accepted by the whole Taiwan province, thus emphasizing his importance in Taiwan 's world of literature..
