Study Of "V+NP" Chunk In Modern Chinese

The research objects of Modern Chinese lexicon are mainly words and set phrases equivalent to words, and free phrases are what the grammar studies. Scholars have got lots of achievements in the research of regular chunks e.g. idioms etc., but still have great room to improve in the study of chunks which make up of words and whose meanings are not so regular.This paper is going to analyze the "V+NP" Chunk systematically in the basis of chunk theory, and try to discuss the basic characteristics and standards of Chinese chunk. In the paper, 644 chunks which make up of 146 Verbs and NP are the research objects which are analyzed from the following areas.1. Chunk-combination ability of verbAccording to the chunk-combination ability of verbs and NPs, the verbs are divided into three types---verbs of strong combination ability, verbs of weak combination ability and verbs of zero combination ability. Factors which are related to chunk-combinations ability of verb are transitivity of the verb, the quantity and use frequency of verbal sense and transitive sense, the semantic category of NP, structure of the sentence concerning the verb and the distance between the verb and NP.2. Semantic meaning of "V+NP" ChunkTotally the semantic meaning of "V+NP" Chunk can be divided into three types—type of vague semanteme, type of half-transparent semanteme and type of transparent semanteme. The semantic transparency of chunks has strong relation with the meaning perspicuity of its semantic components, and the meaning correspondence of the chunks and its semantic components. The semantic transparency of chunks is also related strongly with the semantic understanding of chunks.3. The status of "V+NP" Chunk in the continuous system of linguistic units "V+NP" Chunk lies between "V+N" compound words and "V+N" free phrases.There are similarities and differences between "V+NP" Chunk and composite word or free phrase. "V+NP" Chunk has got a part of characteristics of compound word and free phrase separately. 4. The correlation between verb and NPWhen verb and NP combine and form a chunk, they choose each other in collocation or semantic meaning. Semantic endonymy is special semantic correlation between the verb and NP, and it means that the semantic meaning of a word embodies the meaning of another word.5. The form mechanism of "V+NP" ChunkThe chunks are formed through five ways: literacy quotation, forming from free phrases, expanding of typical collocations, high frequency of co-occurrence, and restriction of idiom principle. Forming from free phrases and expanding of typical collocations are the main mechanisms to form "V+NP" Chunk, however high frequency of co-occurrence and restriction of idioms principle are the common mechanisms.There are similarities and also differences between "V+NP" Chunk and the other chunks. I hope studies of the other chunks can benefit from the study of "V+NP" Chunk in this paper.
