This thesis focuses on the urbanization of French Concession of moden Shanghai from 1843 to 1930, that is the historical course of how the agriculture land use mode based on the Wei-field and Jin-bang (creek)System transformed to urban land use mode. This thesis recovered the urban socio-spatial development based on the data and the GIS, then analyzed the approach to realize the urbanization and the driving force. The academic contributions of this thesis are as follows:1.It is a study to reconstruct generate continuous temporal and spatial series to fully map and understand the continuing spatial expansion. It is also a forland research of Chinese Historical Geographic Information System.2. It is a study to reconstruct the detail process from the water village to a modern city for Shanghai.Firstly, this thesis brings forward the feasible approach to recover the urban social-spatial expansion beginning with the factors of urban space, then takes French Concession as a case study.Secondly, this thesis reconstructs the natural and human sight of French Concession before the opening of Shanghai with the data of DaoQi(道契,Title Deed), and reconstructs the three process from the river system of Wei-field to urban road system.That is, built the roads along or across the rivers, and built the artery through filling the river, then built the laneway through filling the creeks.Thirdly, this thesis analyzed the plan of the built roads and the execution, in order to dicuss the reciprocally relationship between municipal administration of French Concession and the private owners, the effect which these two sides played. This thesis found the big difference between the plan and the execution. Fourthly, this thesis analyzed the municipal constitution to control the style of the building and the sort of the business, in order to understand the municipal restriction to private land exploiture. In the end,this thesis discussed the driving force of urbanization.
