As one of classical periods in Chinese art history, the realistic flowers-and-birds painting in the Southern Song Dynasty made a great achievement, so the comprehensive and detailed study of these paintings would be necessary for understanding the art spirit and creating discipline.The analysis of these realistic flowers and birds painting in the Southern Song Dynasty in the dissertation concerns following subjects:the first, to trace the history of flowers and birds painting in Chinese history and the Southern Song Dynasty as well, and analyze its development in styles, taste and artistic characters to show the achievement during Southern Song Dynasty; the second, to explain the relationship between "Tao" and the painting form ontological perspective with a thorough analysis of form(xing), spirit(shen), brush(bi), ink(mo), vitality(qi), rhyme(yun), image(xiang), worl(jing) and so on by which the aesthetic ideal of the flowers and birds painting created; the third, to explore the relationship between "six principles" (liu fa)and "four standards" (si pin) and the taste and criticism of the style of painting in the Southern Song Dynasty.After discussing these points above, four ideas would be concluded. The realistic flowers-and-birds painting in the Southern Song Dynasty were the combination of great artistic form and spirit, and they realized the thought of aesthetics of "harmony of man with nature" (tian ren he yi). Except poetics in these paintings, as a scholar art form, there were rich aesthetic meanings. At last, I believe there had both divine (shen pin) and wonderful (yi pin) works in the period.
