The theme of this dissertation is to explore what are the crisis awareness, approaches and methodology held by Japanese representative scholars and mainstream research institutes, based on the researches on historical, political, economic and social transformation, and the interaction between domestic change and foreign strategy of the former Soviet Union and then Russia. Through the statistic induction and facts analysis, the author tried to summarize the so-called Japanese Paradigm on its studies on the Soviet Union and Russia, which is characterized as follows:â… . Establishing and perfecting discipline system, based on the leading effect of the national research project;â…¡. The interdependence of academic research and policy analysis hosted by academic institutes and government institutions, which has promoted the development of studies on the Soviet Union and Russia;â…¢. The interaction of humanities and social science and personnel exchanges leading towards the multi-interdisciplinary and comparative studies;â…£. Emphasizing on the studies of its small neighbouring countries;â…¤. Setting small specific research projects as breakthrough points;â…¥. Emphasizing on fieldwork in the studies, which is the fundamental agent driven Japanese academic circles to the equal level of Euro-American counterparts in the last 20 years;â…¦. Insisting on an internationalized development model, multilingual and all-dimensional research;â…§. Attaching great importance to the long-term accumulation of research materials, which constitutes the fundament of academic research.The author elaborated his viewpoints from three aspects:the first is the systemic review on Japanese representative scholars, institutions and their research achievements after the cold war by reading their original writings; the second is summing up crisis awareness, approaches and characters, carrying out the comparative study on the Japanese civilian institutes, professional journals and the counterpart ones funded by government, attaching importance to their different research styles and priorities; the third is focusing on Russian social transformation, such as its political, economic and social changes and the interactions between Russian domestic system change and its foreign strategy, which Japanese academic community pay special attention to and which is also the main thinking of this project.This project initiated a fundamental research towards studies on the Soviet Union and Russia in Japan. It meant to offer some reference to the academic circles in China who address to the studies on the Soviet Union and Russia.
