Since the mormalization of the relationship between China and Japan .unprecedented changes have taken place in the quantity and quality of the Chinese community in Japan with the changes in the relationship between the two contnes and changes inside these two contnes. The total number of Chinese and Japanese Chinese in Japan ,including Overseas Chinese ,has gone up from 50,000-60,000 in early seventies to over 400,000 in 2000,which is contrast to that Scorn after World War n to 1972,where the population of Chinese in Japan fluctuated between 50,000 and 60,000. In addition to the change in quantity, changes in quality have also taken place in the Chinese community in Japan including intellectualization, speciahzation, diversification and localization. In light of the history of the relationship between China and Japan, and on the basis of integrated study on the historical literature, statistical data and social investigation, this article explores and analyzes the changes of the Chinese community in Japan under the background of the normalization of relationship between China and Japan with the theories of historiography and sociology and methods of horizontal and vertical comparisons, " follows " the progress of new and old overseas Chinese in Japan in their Chinese political identification, cultural identification and localization/Through discussions on different "individuals" and "groups",this article draws up a historical track of the "overall" development and changes of the modem Chinese community in Japan and predicts the development of the Chinese communities in major developed countries in the first half of 21st century in light of this track. The major concepts in this article include: l.The history of overseas Chinese and Japanese Chinese in Japan is closely related to and a part of the history of the relationship between China and Japan.lt is an indicator of the relationship between China and Japan. 2.New and old overseas Chinese in Japan are rapidly localized, though different in approaches but equal in the results. The localization of the old Chinese community in Japan advances "gradually in due order" through both political identification and cultural identification, while the localization of the new Chinese community advances by "leaps", with political identification and localization going before cultural identification. 3.As far as the present state is concerned, the Chinese community in Japan is now at the stage of "a margin man" with "no identity", i.e. a certain stage in the nationalizing process described by Gordn. In the long run, the "marginality" of the traditional old Chinese community in Japan will dissapear and will eventually be nationalized in the Japanese society. 4. During a considerable long period from now, the Chinese community in Japan will develop and grow in "dynamic" changes of "new and old recurrence", in which old Chinese immigrants continue to be nationalized while new Chinese immigrants will not stop coming. In 20 to 30 years, the population of the Chinese community in Japan will probably be redoubled from the present figure in "quantity", while in "quality" the population will tend to be younger in average age with further specialization and diversification. 5. According to the population pull theory, the population will tend to be more specialized, intellectualized and diversified. 6. In the first half of the 21st century, the dramatic changes in the Chinese communities in developed countries will bring about a lot of unexpected problems to the Chinese communitiesthemselves, their ancestral home and host countries. The academic and practical value of this article: 1. This article systematically investigates and studies the track of changes in the Chinese community in Japan in the past 30 years and predicts its trend of development in 30 years to come, which has filled the gap of the research in this field. 2. From the point of view of historiography and sociology, this article has provided an analytical research model for the study of the overseas Chinese society. 3.
