Chinese legal documents are very useful for the study of Chinese language history. Among them, ancient and early modern legnal documents are most useful because of a wealth of colloquial speech. Many linguists had done a great deal on the study of these documents <, but ,because linguists were handicapped by the times and conditions,or did not major in this subject ,unlil now ,there have not been a works that make a systematic and scientific research on these documents.This dissertation falls into six parts: 1. Time limit of Ancient and Early Modem Chinese; 2. Classification of Chinese legal documents;3. Value for linguistic study in ancient and early modern Chinese legal documents;4.The cause that these documents have very high value for linguistic srudy;5.Ancient and early modem Chinese legal documents as most useful materials for study of Chinese language history^ Bibiography.We act with caution to use these documents. They had better have three chacters: 1. Their writing time is reliable.2.they have a wealth of colloquial speech. 3.They were written in the same time with their contents and affairs. According to these standards, We have spent most of our time on study of Contract Documents unearthed from Tun-Huang and Turfan.We thought that most of them have First-degree and Second-degree value for Linguistics. They are very valuable to the research of the ancient Chinese language. They can be used to study the born of the new words and new meanings.the change of basic words and technical terms, the development of word梖ormation and sentence structure. They can also be used to suvey the development of Chinese pitches, consonants and vawels; to suvey the connection between Chinese and other periphery languages; to correct the mistakes in the linguistic dictionaries and in the code?studying books.
