Agriculture, as a complex process of biological reproduction under natural or manpower control condition, is affected by such factors as climate, soil and natural resources to a great extent. The differences of natural conditions, and gaps in economy, society and culture formed during history development, provide the base for studying regional agricultural structure adjustment, and formed different response mode and different farming system. Since mountainous areas covers a large number of China's territory, and rural population occupies a large number of its total population, the complex agricultural production conditions in the hills and mountainous area makes agricultural structure adjustment a matter of more difficult and risky. South China is one of the main areas that contribute greatly to the nation's total economic growth, and it is also an important fanning area in China. Chenzhou, Shaoguan, and Ganzhou, the three cities in this area, formed a triangle area which is called Red Triangle Region. It is so called mainly because its fame of RED REVOLUTION BASE and its red sandstone and Danxia landform geologically. In 2002, Mr. Huo Yingdong, vice-chairman of the National Committee of CPPCC, first put forth the economic development idea of Red Triangle Economic Circle. Therefore, the attempt of regional cooperation across province of setting up the Red Triangle Economic Circle step forward under Mr. Huo Ying-dong's guidance and proposal. Chenzhou, which is one of the three cities in the Red Triangle Region, is a typical hills and mountainous areas and traditional agricultural areas in the south of China. The thesis selected Chenzhou city as the basic researching point, and took its agricultural structure as the material object of research and analysis. It showed the main causes of the evolvement and adjustment regional agricultural structure by analyzing the changing characteristics of regional agricultural quotient, agricultural structure, agricultural products structure, regional agricultural distribution, and inner agricultural structure; and brought forward an innovative thought of socialization of management for sustainable utilization of regional land resources by analyzing the changing characters of land resources utilization model; and evaluated the status of theregional sustainable development by using such ecol-economic researching methods as ecological footprint, water resources footprint, and ecosystem service value. By setting up macroscopic multi-object economic model of regional land bearing capacity, it also simulatively optimized and forecasted the regional agricultural structure, and based on which, discussed the countermeasures of regional agricultural structure adjustment under sustainable development background. This thesis had a comprehensive study of the actualities of agricultural structure in the Red Triangle Region, and sum up the typical characteristics of agricultural structure in the hills and mountainous areas in south of China, gave prominence to systematic research, which could provide theoretical and practical bases for agricultural structural adjustment and regional agricultural sustainable development in different areas in China. The conclusions shows:1. The proportion of agriculture in the composition of farming, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery fell substantially from 1978 to 2000. Since the agricultural structure variation greatly affects the growth of agriculture, comprehensive development of farming, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery should be held much account of during agricultural structure adjustment. From 1995 to 2002, the output of chief foodstuffs increased slowly in Chenzhou, while the output of rice went down, that of corn etc. grew rapidly. Animal husbandry, such as the raising of sheep and cattle developed speedily. Fruits and other local featured agricultural products also developed well. The all-round benefits of agricultural products structure adjustment came into view, and the regional arrangement of agricultural products had been opti...
