City is the focus of its surrounding regions, concentrating multitudinous social and economic energy. Following industrial revolution, the pace of urbanization process in the world is speeding up, which has become an invincible trend. In the twentieth century especially in the last fifty years, the urbanization process in developing countries is accelerating when the developed countries have entered the period of suburbanization and post-industrialization. Under such circumstances, some metropolises are emerging in the drastic regional competition and are playing a key role in driving regional economy.Impacted by planned economy, there are immense discrepancy between foreign countries and china in the field of political, economic and cultural context, etc. Many institutional barriers are impeding the sustainable development of metropolis and it is imperative for us to eliminate them through institutional innovation. The aim of this thesis is to draw experiences home and abroad and probe into the reformation of urban administrative system and administrative demarcation, taking Shanghai metropolis as an example.This thesis consists of three main parts or eight chapters, in which the first part is analysis of theory ranging from chapter two to chapter three; the second part is experiences and lessons drawn from foreign metropolis and Chinese Taibei metropolis; and from chapter five to chapter seven is the field study part. The content of each chapter is as follows:Chapter One: Introduction.In the first part of the thesis, the context of the research is presented, then some concepts are analyzed and the framework and main content of the whole thesis are summarized.Currently China is confronted with economic globalization and regional economic integration and is facing drastic challenges after china has joined the world treaty organization. Many problems and contradicts are springing up in the process of administrative reform, which greatly cumber the upgrade of urban competitiveness. Therefore, it's imperative to reconsider the deficiency of administrative demarcation system, and increase urban comprehensive competitiveness by institutional innovation.Then some concepts that can be easily confused are discriminated, which can help us get an accurate cognition about metropolis administrative region.The framework and main content of the whole thesis are summarized in the final part of chapter one. The whole thesis can be divided into three parts, i.e. theoretical analysis, experiences and lessons, and field study. The investigation content can be boiled down to "twoclues, two lays and two emphasis".Chapter Two: Review of Research on Metropolis Administrative Region Home and Abroad.In this chapter, progress of metropolis administrative region research home and abroad are summarized, and its accomplishment and deficiency is pointed out accordingly.As we know, research on metropolis administrative region is an intricate field ranging from the definition of spatial extent of metropolis, mechanism, administration system and administrative demarcation to urban governance, framework of urban government, regional coordination mechanism, etc. Through a comprehensive subject-based review and summarization, we can acquire a clarified comprehension of the affiliated research field.Chapter Three: Influential Factors, Pattern of Structure and Discussion of Theories.First, the evolution of metropolis administrative region is enslaved to many influential factors, i.e. political factor, economic factor, natural and artificial factor, social and cultural factor, urban and regional planning, historic factor, managerial factor and nationality, etc. Second, the pattern of structure can be classified into three types according different criteria, i.e. centralization or decentralization of state power, the urban area and rural area are managed separately or in separately and the form of stratum and range is flat or narrow.
