Although it is an important proposition that utilize network organization theory to study Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs), there are bits and pieces concerning about it. This dissertation is mainly to study Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises Network Organizations (SMENOs) and its governance based on enterprise theory, social network theory and organization theory, and also analyzes revolutionary influence on survival and development of SMEs. This dissertation comes of Coase's Dichotomy of enterprise and market and the enterprise theory's pilot study on the network organization between market and enterprise, and it is also inspired and affected by new economic sociology. It is not only a category of economics but also a cross-discipline owing to applying the study method and tool from management and complexity science.Chapter 1 puts forward several significant questions about SMENOs, review the status quo concerning about these questions and their limitations, and draw forth this dissertation's subject, point out its meaning and background, expound several vital concepts of SMENOs and its governance in detail, and finally introduces this research's aim, innovations, methods, pathway and content structure.Chapter 2 probes into the theoretical origin of SMENOs from the vertical depth of enterprise theory. This dissertation suggests that there is an expansible space between enterprise and market in Coase's literature. While Williamson discussed the existence, rationality and efficiency of middle organization based on the framework of the three-dimension of transaction. These researches bring about the shape of the latter enterprise network thought and concepts concerned. This chapter also introduces New Economic Sociology's social network's analysis tools, suggesting that its practical doubts about the hypotheses of economics, the conceptsmand tools of the theory have expanded our ideas and methods of analyzing problem, which may be used for our reference and absorption.Chapter 3 analyzes new challenges and chances SMEs face in the course of development. The main inferiority and predicament are embodied in their marketing abilities, research and development, brand-creating, capabilities of resisting market risk and the weaker abilities of market financing and exporting, etc. While they also own some opportunities which involve changing competitive means based on the competition of enterprise network under new economic circumstances, and providing new junctures for SMEs's getting rid of their defects and seeking their development.Chapter 4 discusses how SMENOs comes into being by combining production with transaction cost, expounds that division of work and its evolution are a super-circulation process, suggests that evolution of division of labor and its market structure expand the scale of market and chain of roundabout production, producing knowledge-accumulation effect and the formation of specialized economy, whereas highly demanding collaborating relationship and transaction efficiency, therefore promoting the constant changes of economic organization forms and its framework. In this course, market and enterprise organization all show their no-reparative limitations, and then, SMENOs between market and enterprise organization emerges as the times require. These can be illuminated by the model of transaction cost and enterprise abilities.Chapter 5 discusses that SMEs must construct (or join) three networks: tangible network, knowledge and technology network, social relationship network. It also discusses normal and particular characteristics of SMENOs. According to the status of core node, SMENOs are divided into mode of no-center, single-core network, multi-core network, single-core network with multi-levels, multi-core network with multi-side.
