The tourism products all over China and those around the world have experienced different developing phases from scenic areas to mechanic amusements parks, from theme parks to resorts. This dissertation indicates that the mainstream of tourism advance in a long future will be to develop and build recreation resorts, among which the waterfront ones will be of a great portion. As tourism is now under new circumstances of broad recognition, severe competition, rapid developing, and multi-aspect innovation, the creative planning of resorts becomes a major research task. Focusing on the innovative planning of waterfront resorts, the author gives analysis on the varieties and influence from geological environment with reference to the related researches; and brings forward creative viewpoints on the planning notions, technological methods and management measures etc. Furthermore, studying more than thirty international planning bidding projects for lake, river and island resorts, the author analyzes the differences and similarities of waterfront resorts planning at home and abroad, and puts forward the tendency of waterfront resorts planning in the future.This dissertation attaches great importance to expatiate the new planning notions of waterfront resorts. Instructed by the viewpoint that the tourism industry is both an "environmental industry "and a "driving industry", the author emphasizes detailed annotation of notions as humanization, ecology priority, characteristic intensification, market orientation, theme emphasis, strong feasibility in planning waterfront resorts, and suggests innovative notions as three technological measures to forecast the target market, six aspects of social tendency, two levels of tourism needs and wants, three levels of waterfront resorts planning principles, the interior layout modes of waterfront resorts, the three phases of recreation activities of mountain and hot spring resorts, the linkage development of tourism products, which counts for the management and development of national tourism areas and resorts, national waterfront scenic areas.The dissertation is a close combination of planning theories and the author's practical work, which aims at the positive influence on tourism planning companies, on the investment and management of resorts.
