In the dynamic and changing market environment, manufacture enterprises have to conduct product innovation, and adopt for solving Time-Quality-Cost-Service (TQCS) problems. Design activity is one of key points in the products development procedure, while conceptual design is most important in design activity. This is because the basic features and mainframe of products are determined in the conceptual design phase, and the tasks of follow-up steps are only to substantiate and embody these design concepts. With the severe competition of products in 21st, century, traditional design methods and procedures cannot meet well the demands of modern products development. The theory of innovation problem solving (TRIZ) is introduced to the conceptual design, intelligent decision support system (IDSS) for product conceptual design based on TRIZ (TRIZ-IDSS) is a computer system integrated with decision support technology, artificial intelligence and the theory of product conceptual design, which is a necessary means to provide decision support for conceptual design and also is an urgent problem to be resolved in mechanical industry of China. The theory and methods, the system frame, the problem solving system and the knowledge system of TRIZ-IDSS are discussed, which include:(1) The methods of innovative conceptual design based on TRIZ are presented. Based on the description of the background, theory and methods of TRIZ, the general frame of solving problem by using TRIZ are brought forward. Based on the analysis of the morbidity structure of design problems, it is demonstrated that the conceptual design is also belong to the morbidity problems and that it is very important to introduce TRIZ into the conceptual design, the solving projects of the morbidity problems based on knowledge are brought forward. The information description methods during conceptual design are discussed in order to put forward the theory and method of the intelligent decision of conceptual design based on TRIZ.(2) The theoretic frame of TRIZ-IDSS based on data warehouse is built. Aimed at the key technology of the system and the development methods of data warehouse, one kind of frame based on the multi-base integration mode that can support the integration reasoning is presented. The general structure composed by the knowledge system, the problem processing system and the human-computer interaction is designed.(3) The constructional method of problem processing system is gained. The theory and methods of conceptual project generating, conceptual project evaluation and decision-making are also discussed. In the process of conceptual project generating, the theory and methods of generating TRIZ-IDSS conceptual project based on cooperating reasoning is presented. In the process of conceptual project evaluation, the theory and methods of TRIZ-IDSS conceptual project evaluation based on weight fuzzy reasoning are discussed. Studying project prioritized decision-making problems brings the conception of the attribute fuzzy satisfaction forward.(4) The method of designing knowledge system is gained. The technique of model description and model combination run based on FOL (first order logic) is discussed. The Object-Oriented technique is adopted to construct knowledge base and model base. Based on theanalysis of patents, the technique of object-relational database and product-rule representing knowledge, a knowledge acquisition system based on patent is developed.(5) Combining the problem solving technique of TRIZ, the knowledge base of innovation principles and the process of conceptual design, an intelligent decision support system for conceptual innovation design of mechanical product based on TRIZ is developed. The innovative conceptual design of a heat exchanger indicates that the system is feasible and reliable.
