Originally put forward by Akamatsu Kaname, the Flying Geese Model was developed by Kojima Kiyoshi and Yamazawa Ippei after the World War â…¡ and became an influential theory for explaining and analyzing the economic development of the East Asia. It was firstly used to describe the living cycle and process of the emergence, development and decline of a specific industry in budding countries. Later on, it developed to explain the process of all the industries' rise and decline in one country and was used to research into the transformation to internalization of industries. It not only objectively describes the sequence of and the specific means and process to highly development, but also explains the interaction-relationship between the East Asian countries and regions as well as the objective process of their successive rise.In the East Asia, Japan has developed to a strong economic country; the Four Tigers have made a miracle in economic rise; ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) developed rapidly in economy; at the meantime, a situation of interaction between Japan, the Four Tigers and ASEAN has come into being. As Japan increases its massive trade, investment and technology transfer, an Asian economic geese camp lead by Japan has taken shape at high speed. The Flying Geese Model is considered as an economic model for systematically explaining the relations of trade, investment and technology among countries. It emphasizes the driving role that Japan plays in the development of economy and technology of East Asian and attributes the economic development of ASEAN and China to a certain degree to Japan. After the East Asian financial crisis broke out, the Flying Geese Model attracted people's attention again. This Model can be regarded as a new theoretical weapon for studying the East Asian economic cooperation through our research and thinking, which will be assistant and realistically significant not only to the East Asia's exploration for means of economic cooperation but also to China's attendance in international division of labor as well as its industrial structure adjustment.In this paper, the author expounds the history and present situation of the East Asia's economic cooperation guided by the Flying Geese Model in the perspective of international economic cooperation and tries to bring to light the model's reasonable core and the challenges it's facing.The whole paper's framework and the main ideas are as follows:The first and second chapters respectively explain the development and changes of the East Asian Flying Geese Model in theoretical and realistic perspectives. As theory is the base for developing and analyzing the paper, the author discusses the denotation and connotation of the Flying Geese Model in theoretical perspective in chapter I : Akamatsu Kaname put forward all the relevant concepts and three frameworks of this theory; this model covers both the production cycle and comparative advantage; Kojima Kiyoshi developed the model to a new level with his theory of economic manners; Yamazawa lppei's complementation makes the model more systematic and completed.Chapter â…¡ is about the historical traces of the Flying Geese Model. This chapter reviews the history of the East Asian economic development. The model appropriately describes the East Asian economic development from the 1970s to the 1980s. It expounds that Japan has realized its economic development in leaps and bounds by transferring industries of the United State and Europe and the other counties in the East Asia has accelerate their economic development by borrowing Japanese funds and technology.Chapter â…¢ discusses the relations between Asian financial crisis and the Flying Geese Model.
