The social security is one of the most important systems of society and economy in the modern country. Building and improving the social security system fitting in with the development standards of economy is the necessary demand for the concordant development of economy and society, the important assurance of long-term stability of society and state, and the requirement in essence for the happiness and good health of individual member in society. Reform and opening up makes the process of our country's reform of society obviously quicken. In the process, many new problems and situations such as aged population, the polarization in income distribution, the increasing layers of social structure, the extension of scope of the weak group and the unfair distribution of social security have arisen. To solve the new problems and eliminate many negatively harmonious factors need to build a social security system with Chinese characteristics which tallies with our national conditions in the reform of society. So the study on the social security system is inevitably carried forward the historical stage in this background. It is not only the necessity of the development of society and economy but also the necessary conclusion drawn by pondering over the reform of the social security system. Studying our country's social security system in the course of the reform of society has a great and profound significance in deepening and perfecting the theory itself or establishing the realistic road of development.Starting with the connotation, characteristics and functions of social security, the dissertation mainly investigates the historical course of the development of our country's social security system, discusses the connotation of social security fitting in with the socialist market economy and puts forward the train of thought of making further reform on the social security system by making full use of the approaches of institution analysis, comparative study, normative analysis, empirical analysis and the historical and logical study.
