On The Residual Problems Of The Cold War In East Asia

This is a Ph.D dissertation in which residual problems of Cold War in East Asia are explored. The author's attempt is to ponder the trend of the problems in future and suggests the way to deal with them. The main points of this dissertation are following:Firstly, the author does not think the Cold War was only about the relations between USA and USSR, taking a view that USA wanted to ease the Communism and Socialism regimes on the earth and found the capitalism system of the West by American labels instead, so that the end of the Cold War did not mean the completion of American task of the Cold War. The situations, which have different characteristics, are about the completion of American task of the Cold War in the post or present socialism countries and regions in the world. In general, now, USA is on the way to the completion of its task of the Cold War.Secondly, to comprehend the term "cold war" should take three gradation conceptions as broad conception, narrower and narrowest conception. The Cold War ended no completely in the way of inheritance and variation in Asia-pacific gradually, while in the way of drastic change relatively complete in Europe in a relatively short period, so that there are many residual problems of it in Asia. As one of the Cold War residuals, the Cold War Thinking and the Cold War are two closely integrated conceptions and China once had Cold War thinking in foreign affairs in the Cold War era.Thirdly, the Korea Peninsula issue was one of the central issues in the Cold War. After the pattern of two-pole collapsed, the influential shadow of the Cold War has been still lingering about by Korea Peninsula. The Korea nuclear issue came from the Korea Peninsula issue, as a center around which be revolved by crisis and negotiations taking the place by turn. But the Cold War between USA and North Korea has different characteristics from those before the collapse of USSR, being unsymmetrical and disequilibria. This situation reflects USA foreign policy dominant in Northeast Asia because USA strategic benefit must be founded on its Cold War policy in Korea Peninsula issue. But South Korea's contemporary diplomacy is not always a good factor to the alliance between USA and South Korea.Fourthly, the development of the USA-Japan Alliance since the Cold War ended reflects strongly on the characteristics of the Asia model of the end of the Cold War. The end of the Cold War has strongly inherited the Cold War in a relative long time in future without any mark or with some vague marks. The completion of American task of the Cold War partly focuses on the development of the USA-Japan Alliance. The USA policy on the USA-Japan Alliance helps to mould the Asia model of the end of the Cold War, Being a reflector for the end of the Cold War in Asia. Fifthly, in nature, the Taiwan issue is Chinese internal affairs, yet it is the result of the Cold War's development affecting Chinese internal affairs in the Cold War era. USA is invariably the most important key factor restricting the Taiwan issue. The USA policy on the Taiwan issue is influencing inevitably on phenomena of the Cold War gradually vanishing in Asia.Sixthly, China threat theory has distant historical sources. China threat theory before PRC founded was the result from discriminating against and aggressing Chinese. In the Cold War era, China threat theory was decided by the changing situation of the Cold War and the conflicts between Sino-USA. Not only doses China threat theory prevailing in USA have Cold War thinking, but also the idea of this theory, especially its method of demonstration is absurd, because under western historical empiricism it substituted the result from no complete inference induction for that from complete inference induction. The China threat theory assumes contemporary capitalism countries as democratic ones of course, while artificially takes socialism China as no democratic country for granted. In addition, the aggression of capitalism countries' nature was written off purposely in this theory. But after the Cold War era USA diplomacy to China is still under the Cold War thinking bringing out a series of Cold War phenomena between the two countries, especially from the different bottoms of ideology and social form USA containing China, leading to Sino-America relations is in a long term under the influential shadow of the Cold War.Seventhly, in different regions, the beginning and ending of the Cold War were different. The Cold War formed and developed basically in Yalta System in Europe, while in Asia the Cold War came from Europe. The evolvement of the Cold War in Asia has been almost in the mutual restriction between Yalta System and San-Francisco System, that is to say, the different ends of the Cold War in Asia and Europe partly related to the two different systems in the two regions. Undoubtedly, the China and Japan as the Cold War historical factors mould the type of end of the Cold War in Asia. And, not only USA and China, as factor, Japan also affects the residual problems of the Cold War.Eighthly, on the above-mentioned, the author suggests we should be compatible with different countries related to the residual problems of the Cold War in East Asia so that the countries create appropriate internal and external requirements to deal with the problems peacefully in some day. The next, but the most to China is to strengthen preparation in two aspects. For one thing, we should focus to strengthen economic and military as a core of hard power, for another, to properly handle the abroad and domestic problems relating to residual problems of the Cold War in East Asia so to prepare soft power.
