Anglo-American relationship has been an important phenomenon since World War II. As two great powers in the capital world, UK and US established the alliance and have been maintaining it for a long time which has interested many scholars. The author absorbing research fruits of those researchers , combining IR theory with history, tries to study the Anglo-US Alliance in depth and find out why such relationship could be set up and how it could last so long.This dissertation consists of three parts: Introduction,Body text and conclusion. And it amounts to 190,000 characters or so.The introduction firstly begins with the study purpose and its significance, then summarize domestic and overseas research points of views, trains of thoughts as well as methodologies, and later bring forward the framework of this dissertation.The first part of the body text-Constructing an Alliance Theory, sums up viewpoints on alliance studies of IR mainstream schools,then makes effort to put forward from dimensions of the constuction and maintence of the alliance the author's assumption on alliance on the basis of absorption of vantages of other schools.The author emphasizes powers tend to be aligned to counterbalance the most dangerous threat; political and military cooperation is the main factor for the maintence of an alliance; other factors could influence the establishment and the management of an alliance, but they are relatively limited. This part expounds the theory framework of this dissertation,which lays foundation for the following research.The second part of the body text dewlls upon the transfer of hegemony from UK to US before the middle period of the 20th century.It probing from history as well as theory into the vicissitude of Anglo-US relations before the Second World War, generalize rationales of Power transfer by reviewing Anglo-US relationship history and IR theories. This portion concentrates on the evolution of Anglo-American relationship history, providing background for the ensuing bilateral alliance.The third portion is the Enduring Alliance.Explore the establishment of Anglo-American alliance and its characteristics in different phase after World War II, apply alliance theory to the analysis of Anglo-US relationship, attach importance to the influence of consequential event on such relations in order to bring forth reasonable explanation to the undulation of the relationship, in this way the author's proposition could be verified.The periods and contents are as follow:The establishment of Anglo-US alliance and its exptension(1945-55): expatiates on the factors which incured the establishment of the UK-US alliance and the alliance's expansion against the USSR as well as communism during the early period of the Cold War; the undulation and decline of the alliance( 1956-79): explore from the angle of alliance politics the impact of the suez canal crisis on Anglo-American relationship,expound the evolution of the alliance which changed from the "special relationship" to "natural relationship"; the resurrection of the alliance( 1979-90): describe and explain the revival of the alliance in the 1980s and the bilateral collaborations in East-West relations,military affairs as well as the Third World disputes, etc; alliance after the Cold War( 1990-2007): narrate the impact of the end of the cold war on Anglo-American alliance, analyse the renewer upsurge of the relationship.The last part is the conculsion which summarize main points of the body text. Combine history and status quo, generalize Anglo-American relations from the establishment of the alliance,the political elements, military affairs, the economic factors,intra and inter-alliance comunications to sum up the law and features of the alliance and reveal its essence. These points could better current understanding of Anglo-American alliance and further our research on alliance. The evalution of Anglo-American relations also has some referent value.
