Correlation Between Handwriting And Personality

Handwriting as an expressive behavior has become an important media in personality study because of its natural expression, stability and individual specialty. Whether can handwriting reflect personality or not and where is the boundary of its deep personality meaning? Study on the relation of handwriting to personality can not only broaden the theoretical basis of handwriting psychology, enrich the contents and methods of personality psychology study, but also supply certain theoretical evidence and guidance for handwriting analysis practice.This thesis employed "general impression assessment" to explore the study on the relation of handwriting to personality and the following conclusions can be drawn:1. Lexical approach system was employed to collect Chinese vocabularies with handwriting characteristics and found 164 groups of adjectives representing handwriting characteristics by classifying and compounding thesaurus.2. After assessing the adjectives with handwriting characters and employing exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis, the model of eight-factor structure of handwriting general characteristics was obtained: neatness , fluency, strength, extendedness, roundness, change ,length and regularity.3. 43-item handwriting assessment scale was finished. According to the factor structure of handwriting general characteristics, the reliability and validity of the scale meets the requirements of psychological surveying and can be used in other related studies in handwriting general characteristics.4. Gender difference exists in handwriting characteristics and significant differences in three factors: neatness, fluency and regularity between male and female.5. There's difference in different personality types in handwriting assessing characteristics and handwriting assessing characteristics grades also differentiate in personality traits. Handwriting assessing characteristics are related to extraversion-introversion of personality, and writing speed is related to nervousness of personality.6. Handwriting assessing characteristics and SK personality test have great consistency with the test index of simple response time, press speed and action stability and together reflect start, stability and persistency of personality; handwriting is related to figure and function .Handwriting shows great consistency with other behaviors.This thesis broadens study approach for generality of handwriting characteristics. It's the first time to systematically collect Chinese vocabularies with different handwriting characteristics and set basic handwriting assessing terms list. It's also the first time to explore the structure of handwriting general characteristics to obtain the model of eight-factor structure of Chinese words with handwriting general characteristics. The first handwriting general characteristics assessment scale has been made, which enriches assessing tool of handwriting analysis and approaches of personality measurement. This thesis studies the relation of handwriting to personality from two angles of personality types and traits respectively, employs quantitative method to study the relation of handwriting to constitution and behavior and reveals the consistency between handwriting and other behaviors.
