There were three channels concerning modern Sino-French higher education exchange. The first one was mainly organized by French Catholicism. Based on"Tianjin Institute of Commerce and Industry"and"Aurora University of Shanghai"and taking French modern science as its contents, China brought in French educational pattern, including curriculum design, teaching methods, campus culture, development plan, management, rules and regulations etc.The second channel was explored by Chinese non-governmental personages, elites of education circles, such as Li Shi-zeng, Wu Zhi-hui and Cai Yuan-pei and so on. They were moved by France educational achievements and tried to introduce them to China. They put it into practice by carrying on the education of workers who went to France, initiating the association of studying frugally and work-for-study movement, till founding private Sino-French University.The third kind was organized by governments of China and France. It included not only the education of the students studying in France who were selected and sent by Chinese government, but also those institutions and universities in China or France, which were set up cooperatively by the governments of the two countries, such as Sino-French Institut of Lyon, Chinese Institut of Paris, Shanghai Sino-French Industrial College and so on. In order to promote Sino-French education exchange, French Catholicism, Sino-French governments and non-governmental personages supported and urged each other.In 1927, Cai yuanpei presided over and implemented the system of university district and university institute by taking French Educational management system as a reference. Modern Sino-French higher education exchange showed its unique characteristics in management system, fund input and education patterns. By studying the history track of Sino-French higher education exchange, summarizing the accumulated valuable experience and lessons gained by Chinese modern educationists in the course of absorbing French advanced education, changing traditional education and establishing modern higher education system, analyzing the role that France played in the process of Chinese higher education modernization and exploring the best cooperation mode of Sino-French higher education, this thesis will surely provide a reference sample of keeping essence and discarding dross for the present higher education exchange between China and foreign countries. From the perspectives of both theoretical analysis and practical observation, it offers utilization and reference resources for the higher education exchange between China and foreign countries.
