The thesis attempts to inquire the relationship between knowledge and wisdom so as to convey an educational belief, that is, education is the art that enables the wisdom growth in a man by passing on knowledge. The author believes that the essence of education is to transform knowledge into wisdom, civilization into personality. Education should not only possess the external characteristics of knowledge, but also the internal characteristics of wisdom. A well-educated man should be a person who could transform knowledge into wisdom rather than a person who is simply good at book learning. A well-educated man should have the following characteristics: be intelligent, wise, free, and kind.According to the author, there exists a serious problem in the contemporary educational theory and educational practice. The problem is that the contemporary knowledge education could not change a man's destiny in his wisdom development, could not lead a man's wisdom life to the healthy growth. This is because the modern education system is built on knowledge education's belief and practice, which is mono-dimensional, one-sided, limited, mechanic, rigid, objective, etc. The theme of the thesis is to investigate this problem.The thesis consists of three parts.Part one: Education is the art that enables the wisdom growth in a man by passing on knowledge.The author draws forth the proposition ?the wisdom character of education by discussing issues such as, the origin of the problem, the loss of the wisdom value in the contemporary education, the causes of the loss, and education is the art that enables the wisdom growth in a man by passing on knowledge. This part examines the relationship among the fate of modern knowledge, the fate of modern education, and the fate of modern man's development on the basis of the basic conditions of the existence of the educated in the modern knowledge education. The author argues that education is not only the existing way of knowledge, but also the existing way of wisdom. The ultimate goal of knowledge education is wisdom education. The knowledge character of education should be transformed into the wisdom character of education.Part two: The wisdom character of educationThis part consists of Chapter one, two, and three. The author discusses the wisdom character of education from three aspects, that is, concept, history, and formation. Chapter one investigates the basic implications of knowledge and wisdom, the knowledge character of education, and the wisdom character of education from the perspective of the concepts of knowledge and wisdom. It emphasizes the dialectical unity of the "dual-character." Chapter two aims to examine the developmental process of knowledge and wisdom in the development of human being's education history, and value orientation of knowledge's transforming into wisdom. Chapter three analyzes the two forms of knowledge education and wisdom education. The author puts forth that the reform and the development of the contemporary knowledge education could only be realized with the help of wisdom education values and knowledge education methodology. The author believes that one man's character creates his destiny. Wisdom education should be established on the basis of the wisdom character of education. Education would not have wisdom destiny if without wisdom character.Part three: The reform of the contemporary knowledge educationThis part consists of Chapter four, five, and six. The problematic characteristics of the contemporary education such as, mono-dimensional, one-sided, limited, mechanic, rigid, objective are reflected in this part. The author investigates the ways to realize the process of transforming knowledge into wisdom and suggests reforms in the contemporary knowledge education's belief, content, and methods. The contemporary knowledge education should transform the present existing way of knowledge into the existing way of wisdom of the educated.
