Study On The Resources And Industry Boundary Of Posts In The Informatization Environment

Since 1980s, informatization wave has swept rapidly worldwide, becoming another technical revolution after Industrial Revolution. Information technology is permeating every corner of the world, impacting on social and economic fields, and produced profound influence on traditional industries and enterprises. As the typical and traditional communication industry, post is facing the complex effects from informatization. Postal enterprises are chiefly concerned with upgrading industries in good time and exploring new businesses. Post in countries all over the world began informatization construction and reform traditional postal services gradually, and have had a series of outstanding achievements. At the same time the national postal gradually realize the separation from government, and promote the company's share reform and reconstruction. In the global informaization and postal reform background, What is the resources and abilities of postal enterprises? What is the impact of informatization on the core resources? Facing new situation, how should the postal enterprises participate in the diversified operation effectively? What is the impact of widely applied information technology on horizontal boundaries of post? Since post and logistics are different in core resources originally, why the convergence takes place? And what is the specific model of the convergence? In the informatization condition, what happened to China post industry boundary? What should be taken notice in development strategy? This paper intends to discuss the questions.The dissertation reviews related documents and study findings in the fields of the ability of enterprise resources, diversified operation, enterprise boundary, industry convergence, which lay a solid foundation for following studies. In the study of diversified management, it builds the analysis model about the relationship between diversification and the enterprise performance, considering that related diversification being the best choice of postal enterprises. After defining the core resources and abilities of postal enterprises, it explores the push and pull mechanisms for diversified operations, works out three principles of diversification of network, scientific management and action choices, and discusses the parenting advantage of postal enterprises for diversified operation. In the study on postal boundary, the dissertation holds that, the development of information technology exerts multiple influences to horizontal boundaries of post. Part of traditional businesses shrink, part of traditional businesses upgrade, more new businesses emerge and show great potential. In the study on the convergence of post and logistics, the dissertation reviews the origin and development of post industry, defines the attribution of post industry; analyzes the evolution and convergence of post and logistics' traditional boundaries, and discusses on the convergence power and model. In the empirical study on China post, the dissertation reviews the reformation and informatization of China post, analyzes the status quo and problems among China post diversified operation, and gives pertinence suggestions. Following discussing the influence of informatization on China post diversified operation, it studies empirically on the convergence between China post and logistics.Main conclusions of the dissertation are: 1) The core competitiveness of postal enterprises is the resultant of postal network resources. Informatization promotes the core resources and abilities of postal enterprises as a whole. 2) Under the comprehensive function of outer pulling-power and inner pushing-power, postal enterprises may conduct necessary diversification, but need practice related diversified operation on the basis of core resources. Higher related businesses can achieve higher performance for postal enterprises. 3) Information technology changes the boundaries of postal enterprises. Informatization creates a huge postal potential market while it does have strong impact on part of traditional postal businesses and the survival of post seriously. 4) As a result of industry boundaries spreading, post and logistics' boundaries are becoming overlapped, which were clear in boundary and had no overlap. There is a competitive relationship among the products and the market, and the convergence is inevitable. 5) It inspects and verifies empirically the theoretical findings with cases of China post.The innovations of this dissertation are: Firstly, through application of phenomenon description, qualitative analysis, inductive reasoning and so on, it built up variety model of horizontal boundaries of post in informatization environment, and obtained a regular pattern about variation. Secondly, it built up the mathematical model on the relationship between enterprises' diversified operation and the performance, and proposed the basic principle of post diversified operation. Thirdly, it built up the convergence model of post and logistics. Fourthly, it studied systematically on the effects of China post horizontal boundaries, diversified operation, the convergence of post and logistics in informatization condition.
