Since the beginning of 1960s, the main developed countries in the world start to focus more on service industry. The industrial structure switches from'the industry economy'to'the service economy'. Compared with the overseas developed countries, the proportion of Chinese service industry to GDP is obviously low. Chinese government also has paid much attention on this situation. Therefore, the strategy key and the primary mission of'11.5'will be put in speeding the service industry and enhancing the proportion and the level of service industry. The developed regions in China also have responded to important propositions and promoted a series of compendium of developing service industry.The knowledge intensive business service, as an important branch of service industry, pervades in every domain of economy and society. Its development is advantageous to enhance manufacture enterprise's core competitiveness, to the consummation and development of the regional innovation system, to the promotion of service industry internal structure and to the alleviation of the employment pressure. The research on the knowledge intensive business service's problems conforms to our country economy need, and is the demand for the new stage of service industry.There are many research papers about knowledge intensive business service. Innovation is one of the most important topics in them. As constant extensive innovation research of knowledge intensive business service, an urgent question is in front of us. How is the innovation process of knowledge intensive business service carried on? Which factors affect the final innovation performance in these processes? The review of existing domestic and foreign literatures reveals that the majority of researches focus on bridge role in the innovation system of the knowledge intensive business service. However, the research regarding the above mentioned questions is relatively weak. Especially in China, the study in the knowledge intensive business service just started. The theory exploration and the empirical analysis were badly deficient. Replying these questions after in-depth analysis will promote integrity and endurance of knowledge intensive business service innovation theory.Based on the above mentioned, this paper proposed the logic research framework after summarizing the comprehensive correlative literatures. It contains six questions in two aspects. The first aspect is that, it combines innovation theory and knowledge management theory in the process of analyzing knowledge intensive business service innovation process. The key questions that need to be solved include: First, according to the manufacturing industry innovation process model, this paper generalizes the knowledge intensive business service innovation process model using the comprehensive research technique. Second, it analyzes how knowledge management passes through in the entire innovation process, that is, which knowledge management activities of each stage of innovation process play the key role. Third, it solves knowledge diffusion problem of the cooperation process, especially the specific knowledge diffusion problem, in the knowledge intensive business service innovation process. The second aspect is that, this paper studies the crucial influencing factors of knowledge intensive business service innovation process, China taken as a background. At the same time, this paper put forward the interrelated suggestion. The key questions that need to be solved include: Firstly, it finds out the key influencing factors from the innovation process model fused knowledge management activities and possible correlation between the key factors and innovation performance by excavating the theory research. Then it constructs the structure equation model. Secondly, it examines whether there exists direct relationship between influential factors and innovation performance, according to Chinese enterprise's empirical data. Whether does knowledge management play the mediate role? Thirdly, what are the enlightenments of these empirical analytical results to Chinese knowledge intensive business service?The main content and conclusions are as follows:Firstly, different knowledge management activities are needed in different stage of innovation process.A typical characteristic of knowledge intensive business service innovation process is high complexity and fuzzy. It can be accomplished by cooperation between internal organization and exterior organization and absorbing each kind of knowledge. Hence, innovation process is not only new product or service development process, but also knowledge management process. However, there are few literatures to combine these two together. After analyzing massive literatures and visiting correlative enterprises, we derive an extended model of knowledge intensive business service innovation process fused with knowledge management is derived. The key knowledge management activities of the conceptive phase are knowledge acquisition and knowledge transmission. The corresponding support methods include network, magazine, knowledge warehouse, knowledge map, communication, listening and so on; the key knowledge management activities of the evaluation phase are knowledge transmission and knowledge integration. Its corresponding support methods include brains storm conference, on-line discussion database, and mutual trust feeling and so on; the key knowledge management activities of the development phase are knowledge integration and knowledge application. The corresponding support methods include the on-line conference, the common forum, strengthening the learning capability and so on; the key knowledge management activities of the application phase are the knowledge transmission and knowledge integration. The corresponding support methods include training, expert on-line system, visible technology and so on; the key knowledge management activity of the feedback phase is the knowledge integration. The corresponding support methods include the knowledge capturing report, the project reviewing conference, the share standardization shareware, the staff turnovers and so on. The confirmations of these problems can help enterprises consume the smallest resources and obtain the greatest income.Secondly, the knowledge diffusion question of cross-boundary cooperation process can be solved by compensating contract. With the different diffusion cost, the form of compensating contract is different.The knowledge intensive business service innovation product often takes specialized knowledge as the main input elements. The knowledge intensive business service's knowledge diffusion mainly diffuses specific knowledge contained in the innovation product. The specific knowledge is the innovation foundation of knowledge intensive business service and it spillover makes the imitation behavior simple and imitation cost reduced. Moreover, it increases the possibility of initiative innovation of imitation enterprises based on imitation. But to the innovation enterprise, innovation achievement is imitated. It may shorten the time of gaining monopoly profit and bruise innovation enthusiasm. Therefore, the focus of compensation contract lies in urging the knowledge intensive innovation enterprise to contribute the specific knowledge related to innovation, while not injuring the enthusiasm of innovation enterprises. Through the establishment and solution of the model, it is found that compensation contract has different forms with different diffusion cost. When the contract comprises variable cost, the innovation enterprises have the motivation to disseminate their specific knowledge. Because it needs cost to disseminate the specific knowledge, the variable cost must cover this cost. The variable cost increases as the enhancements of diffusion cost and imitation cost, and the weakening of the protection degree of intellectual property rights. Therefore, in order to reduce variable cost of the contract, those aspects are researched as begining.Thirdly, the knowledge characteristics of the knowledge intensive business service and the cross-boundary cooperation affect the innovation performance directly.In the empirical process, it is not only found the direct relationship between the knowledge characteristics, the cross-boundary cooperation and the innovation performance, but also subdivided each dimension of knowledge characteristics and cross boundary cooperation affection to innovation achievements. The empirical results indicate that the tacitness and breadth of knowledge do not have evident role to innovation performance, but the depth and specificity of knowledge are remarkable influential. This result has caused our recognition to knowledge depth and specificity in the organization. Another result is that the two dimensions of cross-boundary cooperation including internal cooperation and external cooperation both have remarkable function to the innovation performance. These results also indicated that, the different dimensions of the knowledge characteristics and the cross-boundary cooperation have different influence on innovation performance. Therefore, when enhancing the innovation performance, several dimensions should be specially focused on instead of every aspect.Fourthly, knowledge management plays the mediate role in the influencing process of knowledge characteristics and the cross-boundary cooperation to innovation performance.Through analyzing the relationship between knowledge characteristics, cross-boundary cooperation and innovation achievements in detail, it is found the hidden mechanism in their complex relationship. If this kind of mechanism runs well, it will promote the exertion of knowledge characteristics and cross-boundary cooperation. This kind of mechanism is the knowledge management. By empirical analysis, it is also discovered the breadth, depth and specificity of knowledge have notable function to knowledge management, but the tacitness of knowledge does not have efficient function to the application of knowledge. In the mean time, it is also found the two dimensions of cross-boundary affect the knowledge acquisition, transmission, integration and application evidently, except for internal organization cooperation to knowledge application. Based on empirical results, it is learned that the implementation of knowledge management has tremendous influence on the innovation performance. So, effective methods should be adopted to promote the implementation of knowledge management.The main contribution and innovation of this paper lies in:Firstly, the knowledge intensive business service's innovation process is explained again from the knowledge management perspective, which overcame the flaws of existing innovation process model and combined innovation, technical support, learning capability and knowledge together. By explaining how knowledge management runs through innovation process and providing the concrete management measure and propositions to each stage step of innovation, this blank is filled in the theory research and the effective improvement method is pointed out for enterprise's practice.Secondly, a kind of compensation contract is constructed to resolve the puzzle about the diffusion of specific knowledge in the process of cooperation, adopting mechanism design theory of dynamic game theory. The designed compensation contract not only encouraged innovative enterprises to contribute their innovative achievements, but also encouraged them to share the specific knowledge contained in innovative achievements.Thirdly, after digging out the relationship among knowledge characteristic, cross-border cooperation, knowledge management and innovation performance, a series of interrelated assumptions are made. Immediately after that, in the context of China's economic practice background, the empirical research has been done. Confirming the influence of knowledge characteristics and cross-boundary cooperation to innovation performance, it is found the knowledge management played the mediate role in the innovation process. Especially, the empirical research studied different dimensions of each variable concretely, so some meaningful conclusions are got. Moreover, the discovery of the relationships among these factors supplied reference views for enterprises to improve innovation performance.
