This dissertation attempts to explore the salient animation industry concentrations from the perspective of media economy.As a sub-system of the media economy, the animation industry has its own properties, one of which is the salient animation industry concentration. Although the spatial and market concentrations of the cartoon industry show an apparent sign in both Japan and the United States, the tremendous difference exists brteen them. In Japan, the spatial centralization is rather salient whereas market centralization is rather weak. In the United States, vice versa.Therefore, it is worthy of study.With the rapid development of national economy in China, the amount of spiritual and cultural products needed by people is increasing. As a result, the consumption of the animation products in China is increasing too. However, the markets of the animation in China have been occupied by foreign products, which has caused much attention from all aspects. In 1995, Jiang Zemin and Lipeng both made important instructions on the development of Chinese animation and cartoon readings by writing to Shanghai Animation Film Studio and Zhejiang People's Fine Arts Publishing House. The event expressed the deep concern about the development of the national animations and had great significance. On the other hand, some issues appeared, covering (1) the tendency of Homogenization; (2)Migratory phenomenon; (3)Waste problem, etc.As one of the important measures in the development of the animation industry in China, the animation bases possess both the spatial and market concentration features. Hence, the study of animation industry concentration in China has not only theoretically-supported values but allso experientially-summarized roles. Based upon the research achievements of media economy and supported by the development of foreign animation industries, this dissertation will elucidate the internal factors and values in animation industry concentration by starting analyzing the status quo of Chinese animation industry. At the same time, after investigation of the status quo of China's animation bases, the dissertation will propose the feasibilities and necessities of the development of small and mid-sized enterprise clusters taken by China's animation bases, and propose the concrete suggestions and plans, through analyzing the similarities and desparities between domestic and foreign situations.This dissertation focuses upon the application study, aiming to analyze and solve the issues. The author hopes that the dissertation will provide a kind of thinking way for the development of China's animation industry.
