This work describes two kinds of multifunctional hydrogen binding strengthenedhydrogel based on2-vinyl-4,6-diamino-1,3,5-triazine(VDT).One is a hydrogen bonding strengthened hydrogel which was prepared by radicalcopolymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylated β-cyclodextrin (PEG-β-CD)and VDT monomer. PEG-β-CD served not only as a cross-linker, but also as a built-insolubilizing agent of hydrophobic drug in the gel. Increasing VDT content resulted ina notable enhancement in the mechanical strengths of hydrogels whose equilibriumwater contents could be modulated from75%to85%by varying the ratio ofPEG-β-CD crosslinker. It was shown that copolymerizing more PEG-β-CD could loadhigher amount of ibuprofen (IBU) in the gels and contributed to a slower release rateof IBU. Plasmid DNA could be anchored onto the surface of hydrogels due to thehydrogen bonding between base pairs and diaminotriazine, thereby mediatingefficient reverse gene transfection of luciferase gene in COS-7cells cultured on thegel surface. The cytocompatible PEG-β-CD-crosslinked PVDT hydrogels withmultifunction of drug and gene delivery hold a potential as tissue engineeringscaffold. The other is a hydrogen bonding strengthened hydrogel embedded with carbondots which were fabricated by one-step microwave assisted pyrolysis of EDTA carbonsource using ethylenediamine as a passivator. EDTA carbon dots were modified withGMA to synthesize the polymerizable carbon dots. Then the polymerizable carbondots were co-polymerized with VDT to form a hydrogel. The hydrogel showed goodtensile strength and excellent compression strength. Meanwhile, the hydrogel wasable to quickly absorb and detect the copper and iron ions. Moreover, the hydrogelwith low content of carbon dots displayed excellent recyclable property to detect thecopper and iron ions. It is anticipated that the carbon dots embedded-hydrogels will beapplicable to the detection of ions in environmental and biological systems.
