When China is booming in economic development and urbanization, acoustic environment in cities is deteriorating. Traffic noises not only cause dangers to people’s life and health, but also influence high-rise buildings besides streets seriously. Technically it is difficult to adopt traditional ways like ground virescence and road acoustic barriers to reduce traffic noises because of the height of the buildings, especially to the outer layer of the windows. Present sound-proof windows are constrained by inefficient ventilation, high cost, and machine noises.Based on detailed study in human resident environment and city planning features, this article analyzed principles of sound-proof windows and sound barriers, resident ventilation requirements, and window structures, and decided that top-open ventilation with small acoustic barriers on bay window can reduce the noises. After theoretical analysis and lab experiments, the following conclusions are reaches through detailed calculation and analysis on collected data:(1) Through analysis on the sources of noises in cities, it is concluded that point and line sounds are the two main causes, as has become the focus of this due research. (2) Concrete methodologies are educed through the following steps: analyzing the diffraction principles of sound-proof windows with acoustic barriers for its noise reducing features; analyzing the methods of top-open bay-windows with small acoustic barriers for theoretical calculation formulas; combining the features of point and line noise sources into the formulas for method.(3) Noise attenuation trends in different height and frequency are obtained through theoretical calculations of the efficiencies of bay-windows with small-scaled acoustic barriers, and analysis on data collection and graphs, as provides effective references for the selection of new natural ventilation acoustic proof windows.(4) It is proved through anechoic lab experiments on bay windows with small sound proof barriers that the due acoustic proof methodology will achieve sound proof results by traditional windows.(5)When acoustic proof efficiency is proved, the paper analyses the applying condition and selection principles of the new ventilation sound-proof windows based on structure analysis; In the meantime, it also testified through calculations that the due research not only achieved acoustic proof efficiency, but also improve the ventilation conditions in an apartment.Theoretically and practically valuable, this research will help solve problems that high resident buildings face presently, and can be applied to such constructions in cities.
